Notice of the death of Mrs. Richardson in the latter part of May must have carried sorrow to many graduates of the College.

Professor and Mrs. Richardson came to Hanover in 1882 and for twenty-nine years both of them were closely related to the development of the College and its emergence from the rather stern and unadorned life of its first century. Mrs. Richardson and her husband had common interests to an unusual degree—in music, art, the drama, literature. It was a happy condition that her interest was as strong as his in English and American literature, the field in which his studies and teaching lay. He once remarked that she could take his classes as well as he could,—a great compliment from a teacher who left so strong an impression on his pupils. In the general life of the community Mrs. Richardson was always to be found, strongly and openly, on the side of every good thing. Any distressed or abused animal aroused her active sympathy. Her generosity to the poor and unfortunate never failed. The church of her choice had her hearty support. She was a charming and gracious hostess to her Hanover friends and guests from abroad. And the afternoon tea hour at the Richardson's house will long be remembered by many former students.

Since 1911 Mrs. Richardson has had her home in Boston always welcoming friends from Hanover but never finding life the same since the death of her husband in 1913.
