With this issue of the MAGAZINE is announced the creation of a set of Dartmouth plates. This series will consist of twelve Staffordshire dinner plates which are being manufactured in England by the Royal Cauldon Works established in Staffordshire in 1774. The Dartmouth plates are being executed under the supervision of Jones, McDuffee and Stratton of Boston.
Twelve different subjects depicting Hanover scenes and buildings form the decorative patterns for the centers of the plates. The "pie crust" edge encircles a lacy etching design combined with flowers. The plates which are dinner service size, 10 1/4" in diameter, will be made in a soft green color particularly appropriate and assured by experts to be a shade of green which combines well with almost any scheme of decoration.
The twelve subjects included in the set are.
The Old Row Observatory Hill Ledyard Bridge The College Church Webster Hall Parkhurst Hall The President's House Dick's House The Tuck School Baker Library Tower Carpenter and Baker D. O. C. House
Something unusual has been done in the preparation of the Dartmouth plates. Several other colleges and schools have adopted the plan of having Staffordshire service plates made showing views of their buildings and campus. Almost without exception, however, these have been photographic views and it was with the desirability in mind of emphasizing the decorative aspect of the set that J. Frederick Larson, Dartmouth architect, prepared drawings from which the plate designs have been made. In this way it has been possible to give expression to the different periods in the development of the College. The plates tell a story of present day Hanover in the appearance of some of the college's famed and beautiful buildings and scenes. Beyond all of this, however, the preparation of the designs by Mr. Larson has allowed for the introduction of an historical note which would have been impossible had photography alone been relied upon.
The subscription for each set of twelve plates, comprising twelve different Dartmouth views, is $l5. The plates are available only in complete sets. The first edition will include all subscriptions received up to November 1, and will be distinguished by a facsimile reproduction of the Baker Library weather-vane on the reverse side of the plates. Orders should be sent to the Office of the Bursar, Dartmouth College, Hanover, N. H., and checks should be made payable to Dartmouth College. A complete announcement of the plates including illustrations, detailed description of the set, and order blanks, will shortly be received by every alumnus of the College.
