The first annual award of the newly established Mandel Prize in American Thought has been made to H. S. Buxbaum 'SI, of Newton Centre, Mass., for his essay on "Thoreau on Education," according to announcement by the committee of award at the close of the last Semester. The prize is $50, with the additional provision that winning essays of exceptional merit will be published by the donors of the prize. A second prize of $25 was awarded to W. N. Fenton '31, of Westport, Conn.

The annual prize awards for the two best essays on some selected subject related to American Thought were established this year by Frank E. Mandel '24 and Richard H. Mandel '26. A committee composed of Professors W; K. Stewart and H. F. West and the donors of the award chooses the subject and makes the award. The essays have direct relation to the material studied in the course in Types of American Thought and only members of this course are qualified to compete.
