We are momentarily pausing in Hartford, Conn., on the weary way to Hanover and although the football season is not at the halfway point Dartmouth faces a long hard road before the Stanford game.
This column was held open purposely this month so that two major games could be included. Holy Cross was defeated 14-7 and now we have just seen the Green routed by Columbia in a spectacular football game which was depressing to all Dartmouth followers.
Not since 1899 has a Columbia team come out on top in this series, and the 19-6 score gained by Lou Little's men shows amply how Columbia has progressed under Lou.
The Dartmouth season started off in a manner that everyone expected. A flock of Green jerseyed players downed Norwich in the rain 56-6, the only highlight of the game being the Norwich touchdown which was made by Evans Ralston who will take his place with Gray Coane as the scorer of a moral victory over the Big Green.
This score came in the last quarter with Dartmouth leading 50-0 and Mr. Ralston plucked a Green lateral pass right out of the air to run 87 yards for the touchdown while the Norwich stands went promptly hysterical. Then came the University of Buffalo and a 61-0 score which saw even more players used than in the previous game. These preseason contests are always dull for the hardened football spectator and I know that I could not tell the stars for each of these games right now without delving into the records.
BEGINNING THE MARCH THROUGH HOLY CROSS W. H. Morton, first string quarterback, hitting the line at mid-field. Successful short passes and line plunges contributed to the steady march down the field for the second Dartmouth touchdown of the game.
