The Dartmouth varsity basketball team remains somewhat of an enigma, inasmuch as they have had as many ups and downs as ever within memory. The game against Princeton, which they lost by a 30-25 margin, really started them on a downward trend, and practically erased them from any chance in the Eastern Intercollegiate League.
This game was followed by an unusual and upsetting contest with New Hampshire and everyone was most amazed when the boys from Durham emerged with a onebasket victory. The score was 27-25, and it began to look as though basketball, too, was on the decline.
But then Dartmouth went out to Cornell and took over the Ithacans in a league game by a 30-19 score. It was rather an upset of previous predictions, for Cornell had held both Columbia and Yale, the league leaders, to small point victories, and Dartmouth's upsetting score came just before the Green was scheduled to play Columbia here.
The Harvard game was between the two League contests, however, and Winter Carnival spectators were treated to as weird a game as has been seen here in a long time. Dartmouth ran up a 12-point margin on the Harvard team before the half was well under way, and it appeared to be another walkaway. Then Harvard came back with 12 points on her own account and the half ended with a 12-12 score. It was neither sensational nor productive of good basketball, and spectators and players seemed quite lethargic over this turn of affairs.
In the second half Dartmouth ran away with the game, and the final score was 34-16, Harvard being limited to a single floor basket in the entire second half. It was a tip-off on what the Green could do in an emergency, but at the same time Dartmouth did not look powerful.
