Starting out with the need for a guidebook to students writing theses, the Committee on Research of the Tuck School has recently completed a "Manual on Research and Reports" which has attracted the favorable attention of commercial publishers and is now being issued for general distribution by The Williams & Wilkins Company of Baltimore, at the price of $1.25 per copy. The purpose of this Manual is to indicate the important elements in the procedure of investigating a subject, and in presenting the material to critical readers. Although applied specifically to problems of business and economics, most of the material is intended for general use in the investigation of subjects within the field of public affairs. The work is the product of the experience of the faculty of the Tuck School and of various experts consulted, and represents within its 108 pages guides and instructions of first importance in the conduct of research and the preparation of reports.
The contents of this book will be indicated by the chapter headings which include the following: laying the groundwork; gathering information, recording and organizing information; analyzing and interpreting the data. Chapter V contains the longest treatment and includes such matters as procedure in writing, factors of style, matters of English and rhetoric important in business, the proper use of excerpts and the handling of reference and citations, the preparation of tables and graphs, and similar topics. Chapter VI deals with the layout of a report which makes it logical, comprehensive and clear.
The book is designed throughout to be of practical help to anyone who has to prepare manuscripts and reports, and it is expected that the Manual will be used widely in business concerns, professional schools, and by individuals engaged in research work.
The Committee on Research of The Amos Tuck School of Administration and Finance has just published a comprehensive "Reading List on Business Administration" which is the joint product of the faculty of the School and a number of authorities who cooperated in the project. It is a pamphlet of 42 pages containing a carefully selected list of books covering the principal aspects of business. Each book is tersely annotated by a sentence or paragraph describing its contents and indicating its emphasis or its relation to other books in the field. The main sections of the list include the following heads: the administration of business; industrial relations and personnel administration; marketing; foreign trade; finance; accounting; business statistics; business law. Within each section there are several subdivisions indicating further classification of the material. In addition to the books listed there are also suggested for each section the available bibliographies and periodicals.
Comments received concerning this Reading List indicate that the Tuck School has gone far in its hope of producing a Reading List which is the most concise and helpful one now available for those interested in business. It is being distributed at the price of 35 cents. Requests for it have been coming in from various parts of the country, and it appears that it will serve a very useful purpose in the field.
