SEVERAL incidents attendant on the 162d Commencement prompt a word of comment; most notably, of course the presentation to President Hopkins by the alumni of the College in grateful recognition of his fifteen years of increasingly notable administration, and likewise the gift of the class of '96 of the bust of Dean Craven Laycock, as well as the speaking likeness of the late Secretary Eugene Francis Clark presented by the class of '01. The latter two constitute noteworthy additions to the art collection of the College. The first mentioned bespeaks the loyalty and love of the entire alumni body to and for the incomparable administrator who has carried the work begun by Dr. Tucker to such amazing fruition, and who, one trusts, will continue the same admirable work through many years to come.
President Hopkins has been thirty years out of college, and during fifteen of those years has been at the helm of the institution. It is no exaggeration to say that in that time he has not only made the college one of the most notable in the United States but also has himself become an outstanding figure in the realm of American education, for whom it would be difficult to find equals and to whom it is impossible to name a superior. It is likewise safe to say that those participating in the gift, which was presented to him by past and present members of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Council, never made a gift with more genuine delight in their lives. No material token that could have been found would have been fully adequate to represent the inward gratification and esteem which all of us feel for Dr. Hopkins, but of the depth and extent thereof it is to be believed the president is well aware. It has been a time of wonderful blessings for Dartmouth; and if the president were a. less modest manand at the same time a greater devotee of Latin—he might well say, "Quorum parsmagna fui." However, since one looks forward to many years more of similar activity, let us hasten to add to the past tense the present and the future. "Great part of which he was, is, and shall be!"
