HORATIO S. KRANS, author of the short biography of Mr. EDWARD TUCK in this issue, is an internationally known educator, being director of the American University Union in Paris. He is a graduate of Colum- bia College in the class of 1894 and later received advanced degrees from the University in English. His tastes and abilities in literature were early shown in his doctor's dissertation: "Irish Life in Irish Fiction."
No HAPPIER CHOICE for authorship of this significant contribution to historical material of our times could have been made. For many years DR. KRANS has been an intimate friend of MR. TUCK. The author's very evident understanding of the love all France bears its revered American friend is complete; so perfectly sympathetic is it that his readers, many thousands of miles away, will appreciate this devotion, too. For him this masterly interpretation of the long and distinguished life of a worldfigure has been, in his own words "a labor of love." The editors of the MAGAZINE and all Dartmouth men join in thanking him for it.
THE TASK OF searching the records of six administrations for material bearing on Ms. TUCK and his connections with Dartmouth was undertaken some months ago by RUSSELL R. LARMON, assistant professor of Administration, a graduate of the College in 1919, and executive assistant to the President 1919-26. MR. LARMON has set down, in the article here published, the first comprehensive story of the significance of all of MR. TUCK'S" benefactions to Dartmouth. The generosity of the donor is, perhaps, of the greatest general interest. But his unfailing thoughtfulness in providing so abundantly for well-considered purposes is the binding thread that the author weaves into MR. TUCK'S decades of active participation in Dartmouth affairs.
THE TWO AUTHORS of tributes to ME. TUCK are well known to Americans. JULES JUSSURAND, author and historian, was formerly French ambassador to the United States. ANDRE TARDIEU has been for many years a prominent figure in French political life. He is now President of the Council of Ministers of France.
