The elections of Professor Frank W. Garran as acting clean of the Thayer School and of Professor George D. Lord as professor emeritus of classical archaeology were announced by President Hopkins at the close of the regular spring session of the board of trustees of the College.
The election of Professor Garran was announced with the granting of leave of absence for the coming year to Dean R. R. Marsden of the Thayer School. A resolution of appreciation of Professor Lord's service to the College was voted by the trustees with his election as professor emeritus, to take effect when he retires in June after 46 years of active service on the Dartmouth faculty.
The election of Dr. Hugh L. Elsbree as assistant professor of political science and the appointments of Arthur M. Wilson as instructor in biography, John F. Woodman as instructor in chemistry, and Robert S. Turner as instructor in zoology were announced by the trustees.
Approval was granted to the plan of the Department of History to convert Room aos of Reed Hall, a seminar room, into a memorial room for Professor Herbert Darling Foster. The room is to be decorated with appropriate pictures and maps and will contain a portrait of Professor Foster. A bronze memorial plate will be placed in the room, which will continue to be used as a seminar room.
It was voted by the trustees to give approval to the plan of the Dartmouth Christian Association for reorganization and for operation under the guidance and with the advice of the chapel director. This plan was submitted to the board and recommended by the President in accordance with the wishes of the cabinet and the Alumni Committee of the Dartmouth Christian Association.
The resignation of Arthur Fairbanks, professor of art, was presented to the trustees and accepted, to take effect at the close of the current academic year.
Leaves of absence for the academic year 1933"34 were granted to William Doty Maynard, assistant professor of romance languages; William J. Rose, assistant professor of sociology; Joseph B. Folger Jr., assistant professor of Spanish; and Raymond R. Marsden, dean of the Thayer School. Leave of absence for the second semester of the academic year 1933-34 was granted to Edwin D. Harvey, assistant professor of sociology. The trustees voted approval of leaves of absence for the current semester granted by the President to John B. Stearns, professor of Greek and Latin, and Lee S. Hultzen, assistant professor of public speaking.
