Basic Formation Described

Precautions notwithstanding, Coach Blaik has no objection to our presenting herewith the formation from which, either to the right or left, most of Dartmouth's plays start:

The No. 1 back, or wing-back, corresponds to the usual right halfback; the No. 2 back to the quarterback; the No. 3 back to the fullback; and the No. 4 back to the left halfback. The starting line-up in the early games, for example, has consisted of Conti (1), Deckert (2), Handrahan (3) and Chamberlain (4). In the line, two tackles playing on the same side of center give Dartmouth an unbalanced line on offense.

New formations, even new names for the backs, have served to call attention to football's changed status at Hanover, and the new uniforms of silver satin pants, green jerseys, and green and silver helmets have the local rooters gasping with admiration. Coach Blaik is justifiably tickled with his new gridiron creation of silver and green, but he won't be entirely satisfied until he sees those satin pants twinkling behind the goal lines at Soldiers Field, the Yale Bowl, Schoelkopf Field, and Palmer Stadium. The intensity with which he watches every Dartmouth move was well brought out by our final question as to what he thought of the rejuvenated cheer-leading at the Maine game. "Why I didn't even notice," he admitted and the Dartmouth cheer-leaders had merely been turning somersaults under his nose all afternoon.
