The Green swimming team made its bow on February 3 by winning over Springfield, 50 to 30. Dick Banfield, Dartmouth captain, was given his first defeat in three years of varsity competition when Frank Howland, Springfield ace, nosed him out in the 50-yard freestyle event.
Providing its share of Carnival sport, the Green tank team met Princeton in Spaulding Pool on February 9 and came out on the short end of a 36-35 score. Captain Banfield captured the 50-yard race and Bill Crouse took first in the 100-yard event, but the remainder of the events went to the Tigers. Although trailing 36-27 and unable to win the meet, Dartmouth fought hard for the 400-yard relay and won this thrilling climax when Crouse spurted ahead of Rizer. Barrett of Princeton barely edged out Jack Smith of Dartmouth in the fancy dive, 80.43 t0 80.08.
The Green swimmers next encountered Colgate, on February 13, and overwhelmed the Red Raiders, 49 to 22. Dartmouth captured first in all events but the backstroke and relay, and would have taken the latter if Coach Hazelton had not decided to give his second-stringers a chance. Captain Banfield again took his 50-yard specialty, and Crouse cut his time in the 100-yard event to 552/5 seconds. Fred Atkinson in the breast-stroke, Steve Meigher in the dive, Jim Ballard in the 220 freestyle, and Frank Specht in the 440 freestyle were first-place winners for Dartmouth.
Harvard came to Hanover four nights later and defeated Dartmouth, 38 to 33, in another meet that saw the Green tankmen winning the final relay event to cut down their losing margin. Stowell of Harvard created a new pool record in the back-stroke, covering the 150 yards in 1 minute, 42 2/5 seconds to break his own mark of 1 minute, 46 1/5 seconds made two years previous. Banfield was bested by Scott and "Wallace in the 50-yard event, and Crouse in the 100-yard freestyle and Ballard in the 220 freestyle were Dartmouth's only individual winners.
