November sth brought the annual contest with Amherst; 2,000 watched the game and a special train arrived with the Amherst supporters. At the end of the 2d period the score was 3-3 but the game ended 15-3. The Purple score was made by Madden, a pretty field goal from the 45-yard line. Dutch Barends kicked a field goal and, after George Hoban had made the touchdowns, Barends kicked the goals. At 7:15 the College Band, under the leadership of Pease, gave the first concert of the year and at 8:00 the Interfraternity dance at G. A. R. Hall was more entertainment for the Amherst guests. A four-piece orchestra furnished music, and light refreshments were served.
The freshmen finished a successful season (6 games with i lost) the same afternoon, defeating Gushing 21-0 at Ashburnham. Louden, Borden, and Hogsett made the touchdowns and Englehorn kicked the goals. Hogsett also scored with a field goal.
At the Harvard mass-meeting Prof. C. F. Richardson, "Clothespins," made his last football address as a member of the faculty, and toasted the Dartmouth athlete, "a good winner and a good loser, a scholar and a gentleman." Prof. Bolser, ex-chairman, Prof. Laycock, chairman of the Athletic Council, and Coach Randall talked The dummy was burned and the trip to the Stadium started Harvard 18-Dartmouth o. "Harvard outclassed Dartmouth in practically every department of the game with the possible exception of Ingersoll's punting." Bennett '13; second "D's" were awarded to G. C. Lewis '12, R. B. Ahlswede '12, F. S. Harris '13, L. G. Bigelow '13, R. L. Johnson '13; W. M. Gibson '13, H. H. Brooks '12, B. A. Hoban '12, L. B. Atkins '11, C. P. Dudley '13, H. P. Sanborn '11, D. A. Cheney '11, and R. E. Farnum '12. The gun club, organized the year before, comprised Miller, Harris, Martin, Crowell (Capt.), and Comstock and lost, 151 to Harvard's 168, out of a possible 250 The glee club, under leader Pounds, and the mandolin club, under leader Leach, made a tour to Manchester, N. H., Somerville, and Jordan Hall, Boston. Election Day in Hanover was November 8th and License was voted down; 41 for and 176 against C. L. Clement at the Inn every 10 days now.
The "Touchdown Song" was brand new and a success at the games and in the musical club concerts; words by Wilkinson '10 and music by Mose Ewing '13. R. G. Geller '12 and S. F. Ickes '12, a new duet specialty number used by the glee club, made a great hit.
The debating team picked were G. M. Morris '11, K. F. Clark '11, and C. E. Snow '12; veterans B. R. Cooper '11 and C. L. Harris '12 were alternates; and the new men were S. E. Aronowitz '11, G. C. Barnes '11, R. B. Barnhardt '11, H. E. Allen '12, A. S. Eiseman '12, P. E. Martin '12, H. G. Mosier '12, D. B. O'Connor '12, M. E. Gately Jr. '13, and A. K. Lowell '12. The "squad" to be cut to 8 after the Christmas vacation.
The Intercollegiate Cross-Country Meet was held at Princeton and Capt. J. W. Noyes '11, B. B. Lyons '12, C. A. Waterbury Jr. 'xi, C. A. Clarke '13, W. T. Jones '12, R. H. Ball '13, H. T. J. French '13, and R. E. Palmer '11 made the trip. J. P. Jones of Cornell won in a new record time and Dartmouth finished seventh among the 10 colleges.
The new gym neared completion. $104,000 had been paid in by undergraduates and alumni with but $12,000 subscribed to the fund still to be collected. The freshman class, however, was given its chance to contribute and collectors for each dorm were appointed.
