BATES GAME DISAPPOINTING
November 1935 C. E. W. '30

Everyone looked for a stirring fight in the Bates game on October 12, but a crowd of 10,000 Columbus Day spectators was sorely disappointed when Coach Blaik's full squad of uninjured players pushed the Bobcats around at will and emerged on the long end of a 59-7 score. Dave Morey '13, coach of the famous "Giant-Killers," did not play his first team more than one quarter all together, and the resulting opposition was more disorganized than that in the first two games of the schedule. The Dartmouth varsity was in action for about 20 minutes, throughout nearly the whole first period and half of the third, and once again the regulars blocked, tackled, ran and passed with precision. On defense, however, it still remained an untried ball club.

Chamberlain, Kiernan, and Conti carried the ball deep into Bates territory in the opening minutes of play, and a pass, Chamberlain to Kenny, fashioned the first Green touchdown. The Bobcats chose to receive the following kick-off, but a lateral went awry on the 5-yard line and Chamberlain recovered for Dartmouth. Three plays later the Indian halfback was over for the second touchdown of the afternoon. Chamberlain took the Bates' kick-off back 25 yards, and after an exchange of punts had gained 20 yards, another drive ended with Kiernan's plunging across from the 2-yard mark. With the score standing at 20-0 the varsity retired in favor of the second team. During the second period Team B floundered around a bit, but produced one touchdown march, with Casey carrying across after Hollingworth and Christiansen had figured prominently in the advance.
