Coach Tom Dent's Dartmouth soccer team has won three of its four games thus far. Dartmouth defeated the University of Massachusetts in the opener 9-1, was nosed out by Amherst 4-3, defeated the University of Connecticut 3-1 and Williams 7-0.
Captain Bob Drawbaugh, who plays at either inside left or center forward, is the team's top scorer. He booted in four goals against Massachusetts and five against Williams. Sophomore Carl Hirsch at outside right and Gordon Lenci at center forward are other leading, scorers for the Indians.
The Amherst game was the most interesting of the four contests played to date. With the score tied at 3-3 and four minutes left to play, a hands penalty was called against Dartmouth and Amherst's Charley Rogers lifted his penalty kick above the hands of Dartmouth goalie Win Bridge to win the game for Amherst.
Dartmouth had pulled away to an early first-period lead when both Captain Bob Drawbaugh and Carl Hirsch scored, but Amherst struck back with three goals in the second period to pull ahead. In the third quarter, Egil Stigum, Norwegian student at Dartmouth, netted a difficult angle shot to tie up the game and the score remained deadlocked until that last-period penalty kick.
Actually the Big Green has gone through the most difficult part of its schedule. In the remaining games Harvard, Boston University, Brown and Cornell only Harvard appears tough, so Dartmouth is still very much in the running for the New England soccer crown. The team has further been strengthened by the return of goalie Don Swanson and injuries have been kept at a new low.
