The Morrill Allen Gallagher Memorial Scholarships, awarded annually to two undergraduates with Rhodes Scholarship qualifications, have been granted this year to Paul L. Guibord '36 of Melrose, Mass., and Victor Kiarsis '36 of Haverhill, Mass. The scholarships, carrying stipends of $600 each, are based upon a gift of $25,000 made by the late Mrs. Kate M. Morse of Boston.
The Justin H. Smith Fund Scholarships of $500 each have been awarded this year to James V. Buyoucos '36 of Johnstown, N. Y., Cyril W. Greene '36 of Ozone Park, N. Y., and Richard C. O'Hare '36 of Brighton, Mass. These scholarships, based upon a fund established by bequest of Justin H. Smith '77 of New York, historian and former member of the faculty, are awarded annually to students "distinguished for proficiency in studies, sound morals and physical health."
Regional scholarships, awarded for a four-year period to outstanding members of the freshman class, have been announced as follows:
The William Pierce Johnson Scholarships for applicants from California have been awarded to George C. Darr of Claremont and John H. Gray, Jr., of San Francisco. These scholarships of $700 each are based on a fund of $100,000 given by Mrs. W. P. Johnson of San Francisco as a memorial to her husband, William Pierce Johnson 'BO.
The Charles F. Brooker Fund Scholarships of $500 each for applicants from Connecticut have been awarded to Robert C. Dickgiesser of Derby, Kenneth T. Hugo of Bridgeport, and Erwin L. Lyon Jr., of Ansonia. They are based upon a fund of $133,000 given by bequest of Charles F. Brooker of Ansonia.
NEW HAMPSHIRE AWARDS
The Second College Grant Fund Scholarships for students from New Hampshire have been awarded to George R. Hanna of West Swanzey and Gregory G. Zitrides of Manchester. Valued at $500 each, they are based upon funds derived from timber cuttings on the Second College Grant, a tract of land in northeastern New Hampshire given to Dartmouth College by the State of New Hampshire in 1807.
The Randolph McNutt Fund Scholarship for an applicant from New York has been awarded to Horace B. Chapin of Batavia. This scholarship, amounting to $600, is based upon a fund established by bequest of Randolph McNutt of Buffalo, and is awarded each alternate year.
The winners of the Morrill Allen Gallagher Memorial Scholarships have both been prominent in campus activities. Guibord is captain of the hockey team, and has won numerals and letters in hockey and tennis. He was a Commencement usher last June, and is a member of the Glee Club, Casque and Gauntlet, Green Key and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. His scholastic average through junior year is 2.6.
Kiarsis won letters in football and lacrosse last year, and also won his football numerals as a freshman. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity and has a three-year scholastic average of 2.5.
Among the winners of the Justin HSmith Fund Scholarships, Buyoucos has a general average of 3.3, Greene of 3.0, and O'Hare of 2.6.
