SNOW HAD COME to Hanover and before December ist arrived "the first sleighing party occurred. A young man drove up to the Inn in a single sleigh and after taking a young lady, drove off down East Wheelock Street."

Basketball practice under Captain Mullen began with a squad of: 1911—Mullen, Hedges, McCarthy, Pearce, Goodyear, Sterling; 1912—Mensel, Jones, Hammond, Hoban; 1913—Fletcher, Edwards, Scully, Winship, Gibson, Brady, Moore and Knight. Coach Ready assumed charge. Hedges ruled ineligible as he attended another college last year E. K. Hall resigned as member of the Athletic Council and the Athletic Association adopted resolutions at its meeting Doc Kingsford reported that injuries to the football squad were 48% less than last season, due chiefly to "the rules prohibiting pushing, and establishing a twenty-yard neutral zone."

Sid Clark 'l2 was elected captain of next year's cross country team The hockey squad, consisting of Fred Eaton, Bill Mason, Sarg Eaton, Patten, Luhman, Taylor, Gould, Bigelow, Stucklen and Schulte, started practice on Faculty Pond. The new hockey coach, Ray Vye of Moncton, New Brunswick, came to Hanover from Amherst Doc Bowler reported that since the opening of college one-third of the College had competed in athletics and by spring one-half the College would have been aspirants for the teams.

AVIATION PIONEERS ON THE CAMPUS

The Dartmouth Aero Club was formed with some 60 men signifying their interest. A committee was appointed to ascertain how many would back the undertaking "financially and morally," and consult with Harvard, Cornell, and Pennsylvania concerning club organization. John W. Pearson '11 was elected president; L. P. Hall Jr. '11, vice-president; R. F. Paul '11, secretary; J. M. Mathes '11, treasurer; H. B. Lines, L. W. Snow, and H. H. Semmes, board members. A cup was offered for the best working model of an aeroplane. J. B. Benton '90 and W. C. Hill '02 were elected honorary members. A glider was to be purchased when 20 joined and paid dues.

The Outing Club opened its second year with a meeting in Wilder Hall. Profs. Hull, Goldwaite, Clark, and Dock Licklider spoke upon the different phases of last year's success and the year's plans. Fred Harris '11 was elected president; A. T. Cobb '12, vicepresident; W. L. White '12, secretary; and W. H. Weston Jr. '11, treasurer. For the first trip of the year the members went on the 1:50 train to Pompanoosuc and returned by ski or snowshoe in small groups. Part way back to Hanover all met near a lake for doughnuts, coffee, and bacon around two big fires. With the idea of eventually establishing a chain of huts a day's march apart by erecting one cabin a year, the club planned to build this year on Moose Mt., eight miles away 15 students and 5 profs, made the second Outing Club trip, camping overnight in a log cabin at Campanoosuc, four miles northwest of Pompanoosuc. Food was provided but each man carried his own blanket.

Fred D. Day, E. B. Leutwieler, R. C. Stoughton, C. L. Harris, and J. H. Cleaves were elected to the Prom Committee The Senior Class voted to continue the class smokers held last year with such success. L. Y. Ho '11, Shanghai, China, was the speaker at the first one.

President Nichols on December 12th, at a special mass meeting of faculty and the student body in Webster Hall, announced a gift of 1400,000 from Edward Tuck, the income to be applied "to the improvement of the existing scale of salaries of the faculty of the college in all its departments as now constituted, and as increased later by the addition of new professors and instructors, including a librarian." Palaeopitus cabled Mr. Tuck "Simultaneous meetings to-night of all four classes to express appreciation of your loyal generosity to Dartmouth. (Signed) Twelve Hundred Dartmouth Men." "Greatly gratified by hearty message of Dartmouth's twelve hundred. (Signed) Tuck" came the reply by cable on the 13th.

Fire started in a pile of straw on the top floor of the new Administration Building one Saturday afternoon at 5:15 bringing forth the local fire dept. and nearly the whole college. Very little damage was done.

The Athletic Council on Dec. 16th appointed Frank W. Cavanaugh '99 as field coach and Joe T. Gilman '05 and Lawrence H. Bankart '10 his assistants The "D" football men and members of the Athletic Council were guests of Alfred E. Watson '83 of Hartford, Vt., at a dinner in their honor at the White River Tavern. Speakers were Profs. Bolser and Proctor, Grad. Mgr. Graves, Managers Keeler and Knapp, Capt. Ryan and Capt.-elect Daley. "Sleighs conveyed the men to the Tavern." The menu included Dartmouth Green Turtle Soup, Lobster a la Harvard, and Peaches a la Smith. A telegram was sent to the Worcester Alumni and Coach Cavanaugh.

Delta Sigma Rho national intercollegiate honorary debating society installed at Dartmouth "to encourage sincere and effective public speaking." Craven Laycock '96, J. M. O'Neill '07, and four students were initiated as charter members. Twenty of the alumni eligible have signified their intentions of joining. These include Nelson P. Brown '99, Guy A. Ham '00, Andrew Marshall '01, E. E. Day '05, Ralph L. Theller '09, and Warren C. Shaw '10.

DRAMA IN LEBANON

"David Garrick" was presented by the Dartmouth Dramatic Club in Lebanon Town Hall. A. C. Keough '11, H. S. Lena '12, J. R. Ervin '12, S. P. Tuck '13, A. E. Wyman '13, A. S. Dunning '11, H. H. Semmes '13, C. B. White '12, G. M. Clays '14 and R. G. Geller '12 made up the cast. The Christmas trip included Greenfield, Lawrence, Maiden, and Winchester, Mass., Jersey City and East Orange, N. J., Berkley Theatre, New York City, and Washington, D. C., at the New Willard.

The Christmas vacation started, Hanover was almost deserted. The student body planned dances, dinners, and the theatre where were such attractions as Forbes-Robertson in "Passing of the Third Floor Back," Bessie McCoy in "The Echo," Eva Tanguay, Wm. Courtenay, and F. Zeigfield, Jr's Revue—"Follies of 1910" starring Fanny Brice, Shirley Kellogg, Bert Williams, and Lillian Lorraine, etc.
