The name of the game for Dartmouth's tennis team this spring is doubles, doubles, doubles.
In 17 years of coaching at North Carolina State before coming to Dartmouth five years ago, John Kenfield's teams were able to sweep the doubles and win a match 5-4 only one time.
This spring the Indians have done it twice. It happened against Amherst and then in an Eastern League match against Brown.
"The odds of a doubles sweep after losing the singles 4-2 are awfully, awfully long," said Kenfield. They were particularly long against Brown as Captain Justin Stanley and Allen Jackson lost the first set of their doubles play. They came back to win 7-5 and then, after trailing 3-1, took the clincher, 6-4.
With two juniors, Lloyd Ucko and Brian Williams, playing 1-2 in singles and leading the doubles, the Indians have produced their fourth winning record in five years under Kenfield. The exception was a 9-9 mark last spring.
At the New England tournament, Dartmouth finished third behind Harvard and Williams, but the Indians were Presented a singular honor when the players and coaches in the tourney voted Dartmouth the Clarence Chaffee Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship.
