Stephen D. Rose '13 is finding adventure as first mate of the S. S. Bear of Oakland, supply ship of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, currently plowing through the icy waters of the Antarctic Circle. The ship steamed out of Dunedin, New Zealand, on New Year's Day. It is expected to start its return journey north early in February, carrying members of the expedition, now at Little America, and their supplies.

Rose was a star performer in the goo-yard dash and on relay teams when at Dartmouth. He was graduated in 1913 and subsequently became a member of the Boston Athletic_Association. From 1914 to 1916 inclusive, he won the national championship in the 300-yard dash. He was also a member of the B. A. A.'s championship relay team during those years.

During the World War he was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy. When at home in Clifton, Mass., Rose devotes much of his time to yachting.
