To perpetuate the memory of the late Robert Henry Michelet '34, Palaeopitus has undertaken to raise the funds necessary for an oil portrait of the famous scholar-athlete, to be hung prominently in the Baker Memorial Library. Contributions to the memorial fund are anticipated from both alumni and undergraduates. Palaeopitus itself has started the fund with a contribution of $75.00.
Julius Katzieff of New York has accepted the commission to execute the oil portrait, and a special committee of Palaeopitus is working out other details in connection with the memorial. Bobb Chaney '35, treasurer of Palaeopitus, is chairman of the special committee, and contributions may be directed to him.
In announcing the memorial, Palaeopitus declared: "Since the death of Bob Michelet last March, the fact has been proven many times that he stood, as no recent undergraduate has, for all that Dartmouth men have most respected and loved. Recognizing that fact, Palaeopitus has felt it entirely fitting and proper that some lasting memorial be made to him. After much deliberation, it has been decided that an oil portrait, to be prominently hung in the library, would be the most satisfactory form for that memorial. Palaeopitus feels that this project is entirely in keeping with the traditions of Dartmouth, and therefore is backing it, confident that it will meet with the support of alumni and undergraduates alike."
Bob Michelet, football and track star, Rhodes Scholar, Senior Fellow, Phi Beta Kappa student, president of Palaeopitus, and class president, died at Dick's House on March 14, after a two weeks' battle against pneumonia.
