The fiscal year of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit ended on April 4th with a dinner and meeting at the Detroit Boat Club. A new set of by-laws, drawn up by Robert Meginnity '25, was adopted and officers for the ensuing year were elected. Ford Whelden '25 who has been president of the club for four years refused to run for that office again and a classmate, Robert Wiley '25, was elected to the office. Philip K. Watson '19 was elected vice president. Ford Whelden was elected secretary-treasurer. Richard Brown '29 received the office of assistant secretary and treasurer. F. James Bear '19 and Frederick R. Husk '17 were elected to the executive committee with terms expiring in 1938, and Arnold Barrett '10 was elected to the committee for the next year filling the vacancy left by the election of Phil Watson to the vice presidency. The balance of the executive committee is made up of Alexander Maynard '05, Howard Kaichen '20, and Robert Meginnity '25.
The annual banquet of the Club was held in the banquet room of the Hotel Statler on the evening of March 18. President Hopkins was the guest of honor. Over 100 men attended. The Club had as its guests including President Hopkins and A1 Dickerson '30, Frank Cody, superintendent of Detroit Schools; Warren Bow, assistant superintendent; Daniel Fletcher and William Fries, headmaster and assistant headmaster respectively of the Detroit University School; William G. Lerchen, director of the Cranbrook School, Owen Emmons, principal Cooley High School; Charles Novack, principal Northwestern High School; E. J. McBay, athletic director Northern High School; George Mead, director Health Education; and some fifteen other representatives of the three high schools mentioned. The eighth presentation of the Dartmouth College Cup was made following the dinner. Cooley High School was the winner this year. To date seven different high schools have held the cup. Short talks were called for from the guests mentioned, followed by President Hopkins' speech. The banquet ended with the singing of "Men of Dartmouth" and an informal reception in President Hopkins' and Al Dickerson's rooms. The Club was deeply grateful to President Hopkins for this visit—his first to Detroit in four years.
On January 15, Earl Blaik visited Detroit and a special luncheon was held at the Savoyard Club. Informal discussion continued throughout the afternoon. In the fall of 1934 joint luncheons and meetings were held with the Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Princeton associations on the Saturdays when football games were played with the respective institutions. Play by play returns of the games were received.
There are one hundred and fifty-two Dartmouth men in Greater Detroit of whom forty-seven paid dues for 1934. Thirty men from Detroit are undergraduates in college at the present time.
