The election of Professor Rosenstock-Huessy, of the University of Breslau, Germany, as Professor of Social Philosophy at Dartmouth College for the coming academic year was announced on May 15 by President Hopkins. Professor Rosenstock has been at Harvard for the past two years as Visiting Lecturer, Lowell Lecturer, and Kuno Francke Professor of German Art and Culture.

Professor Rosenstock is the author of many important books on the philosophy and problems of society. The publication of his volume on Succession in early medieval states led to his appointment under Sohm at the University of Leipzig as a member of the most distinguished legal faculty in Germany. After the War he was so profoundly impressed with the crisis of modern civilization that he resigned his professorship at Leipzig and became asin working out a new labor policy. Finding that nothing less than a new school of labor problems would enable the younger generation to cope with existing conditions, he proceeded to found the Academy of Labor at Frankfort-on-Main, with the assistance of Carl Becker, then Minister of Education.

At that time Professor Rosenstock wrote his study on problems of the decentralization of industry as well as his striking essay on forces building the community. Soon afterwards he went to the University of Breslau as Professor of Sociology and the History of Law. While there he developed in his free time the idea of the Labor Camp which was to bring together young men of all classes in a new community of work and play, an idea which has grown to great proportions in Germany. One great result of his theoretical work at Breslau was his monumental work on DieRevolutionen in der Europaischen Geschichte, a book which is about to appear in English and which is said to revolutionize the conception of European history.
