Such headlines in the papers as "Dartmouth Skis Point toward Garmisch and Winter Olympics" have become an everyday occurrence, but we do not tire of them. Four Dartmouth men are now training in the Bavarian Alps for the Olympic ski races to be held February 7-16, inclusive.
For Dick Durrance, going back to Garmisch will be something of a native's return. He spent six years of his life in Garmisch, returning to the United States in 1933, and while there became the Junior Downhill Champion of Germany. In the Bavarian Alps he acquired that balance and grace which are the envy of the best skiers in the country today, and which started him on his American championship career. Last winter in his freshman year at Dartmouth, he won just about every major downhill and slalom event he entered. Some of his records are as follows:
1934 Eastern Downhill Champion. 19315 Slalom: five first places. 1935 Downhill: five first places including the Olympic tryouts and Carnival. 1935 Jumping: first in Intercollegiate championships, two second places, and one fifth place. 1935 Langlauf: first in Dartmouth Carnival, fifth in the College Week Race at Lake Placid. 1935 Combined jumping and langlauf: first in Dartmouth Carnival, third in Toronto Internationals. 1935 Combined Downhill and Slalom: first in Toronto Internationals, first in Olympic tryouts.
