The normal activities of the school during recent days have been accentuated by the thump-thump of a pile-driving machine as it hammered the supporting piles of the new auditorium into place. Although the sounds were somewhat distracting at times, they certainly were welcome as an indication of the continuing improvement of our facilities.
Selection of the class to be admitted in the the fall of 1962 is already well under way. Approximately sixty Dartmouth candidates have been interviewed, and almost daily sessions are being held for applicants from colleges other than Dartmouth. Now is the time for alumni to alert us to any good prospects they may wish to propose, thereby obviating the annual Admissions Committee problem of finding a place for a superior student after all available vacancies in the entering class have been filled. Incidentally, more than half of the group has been selected as we write this.
In conjunction with College officials, plans to cope with possible fallout problems are being initiated. Among the others is included preparation for an intensive course to prepare medical students to serve in emergencies in the various shelters which are expected to be developed around the campus.
Rufe Bierly M' 24 was one of a group of medical directors for insurance companies who were our guests on a tour through the Medical School recently. Louie Buie M'50 visited us very briefly while on a medical travel tour out of Minneapolis where he now maintains his permanent address. Al Root M'56 reports that he will be located at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia next year studying Pediatric Endocrinology. Marty Carter M'59 was recently married to Ann Babson, the twin sister of William Babson Ml, in Annisquam, Mass. Seen at the Harvard game were Robin Saphir M'58 tearing through the stands, and Lee GilliattM'60 with a very easy-on-the-eyes young lady.
