Not the symbol - the undergraduate lumberjacks. "For the first time anyone can remember, the Dartmouth team won a woodsmen's competition," Jim Taylor '74 told us recently. Down to Maine, at the Colby College Woodsmen's Weekend, the Dartmouth A team competed in 19 loggers' events against 25 other teams representing nine different schools. They chopped, split, sawed, and paddled their way to place not quite a point ahead of Paul Smith, a forestry school. Although the alumni teams aren't ranked against the student crews, the Dartmouth alumni accumulated a higher score than anyone - 1,602 out of a possible 1,900. Dartmouth sponsored the two-day event last year, so it won't be until 1980 that the felling trees and sawbucks are set up again on the Green.
