Chappelear, Fred Carroll, and Curt Sheldon happened to meet at one of the receptions before the banquet of the Trust Division of the American Bankers Association in New York last Thursday evening—and held a short reunion. Fred is a member of the executive committee of the Trust Division, A. B. A., his term expiring in 1937.
The city of New Britain, Conn., has decided to build the new memorial entrance to Fairview Cemetery, which will cost about $10,000, of granite which will come from the quarries of The John Swenson Granite Co. of Concord, N. H. An analysis of the stone by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology convinced the architect that this was the right stone for the purpose. Roy Abbott is with the Appalachian Tanning Company of Asheville, N. C.
Your Secretary, Harriet, and the boys went to Hanover for the alumni party over the 22d of February and had an exceedingly fine time. Tried the new ski run and ski-tow on Oak Hill; did very well riding up on the ski-tow, but not so darn well trying to come down. The snow was packed hard, the going was very fast, and the turns on the icy surface were highly difficult for one of the limited ability of your Secretary. It is a puzzle to me that more members of the class do not go up to Hanover over the 226 with their families. It's a bully vacation, inexpensive, you see lots of people you know and like, and have all kinds of fun and enjoyment. The children's carnival alone is more than worth the trip, and there are always enough varsity events to fill in any spare moment. You don't need to be a skier to have a marvelous time, as I can testify from personal experience. I found that Sid and Marion Hazelton were representing George Washington and Martha Washington as the chief figures at the big ball that was given in the gym Saturday night. Ruth and Phyllis Hazelton with their partners were among the finalists in the exhibition dancing. Little Deborah Hazelton won first prize in her class for the 100-yard dash on skis and in the skating race, and was second in the slalom. She declines to use ski poles—doesn't like them, and how she made the stops and turns that she did on the hard-packed surface was more than I can figure out. Young Sid is just about ready for the big jump, but had twisted his ankle and was not in shape to compete. Sid Sr. is doing a great deal of Red Cross work, instructing police departments, school people, and other prospective instructors.
My boys learned a great deal about skiing from their visit, watching the various Hanover experts perform, and thoroughly enjoyed the boxing and wrestling matches, the hockey game, and the other varsity competition that was offered.
Bert French attended the Boston alumni dinner February 25. We don't see Bert as often as we'd like, and it was very much of a pleasure to have him join the group. Also present were Emile Erhard, Phil Avery, Wallie Ross, Howard Spaulding, Cad Cummings, and Bob Holmes.
Your scribe was honored by election to a vice presidency of the Boston Alumni Association.
