VIEWED WITH MUCH head-shaking at the start of the winter season, both the hockey and basketball teams closed highly creditable campaigns in March, the Big Green six taking second honors in the Quadrangular Hockey League and the Indian courtmen tying with Yale for third place in the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League. Both teams had the full support of the student body throughout the winter, their spirited under-dog play reviving much of the athletic enthusiasm that has disappeared in recent years.
Although Dartmouth and Princeton each ended up with three victories and three losses in the hockey league, the Indians were awarded second place on the strength of their superior goal record. Captain Paul Guibord shared scoring honors with Roberts of Harvard and Willis of Princeton, each of the trio compiling 11 points. The final league standings were:
Goals W. L. T. Pts. For. Agst. Harvard 4 2 0 8 34 16 Dartmouth 33 0 6 23 25 Princeton 33 0 6 17 21 Yale 2 4 0 4 16 30
Dartmouth engaged in only one league tilt during the past month, dropping its final contest of the season to Princeton, 4 to 3. Previously, the Green six defeated Bost'on University, 8 to 3, and Brown, 5 to o. In an exhibition contest on February 29, the Storm Kings of Littleton, N. H., composed of crack Canadian players, downed the Indians, 2 to 0.
In the Princeton game, played at Princeton on March 7, Dartmouth got away to a two-goal lead in the opening period, but could not hold its advantage as the Tigers forged ahead in the second session, took a 4-2 lead in the final period, and then staved off a spirited Green rally to win. The final ten minutes were filled with thrilling action, and only valiant work by Goalie Stewart Gregory saved the day for the Orange and Black.
Dartmouth lost no time in getting started, opening the scoring at 4:12 as Jack Costello outskated the Nassau defense, took a pass from Dick Lewis and drove the puck home. Less than two minutes later, at 5:58, Lewis counted on a hard shot from close in. Princeton came back with one goal when Willis and Savage collaborated at 6:37 for the final score of the first period. The second period was all Princeton's with Savage and Lawson counting at 7:11 and Cook adding a solo tally at 17:48. The Tigers added a fourth goal a little more than a minute after the final session started, Savage netting a pass from Lawson. Dartmouth seemed out of the running at that point, but Allen tallied alone when Princeton was a bit slow in clearing the puck from the danger zone, and the Indians then uncorked their final offensive which barely failed to even matters.
