IN their first game of the season, the Big Green football team overwhelmed the disorganized Pennsylvania Quakers in a 40-7 victory on Memorial Field. Penn- sylvania took the lead with a touchdown in the first quarter, but Dartmouth took control of the game after a 28-yard field goal by junior Tim Geibel early in the second quarter. Quarterback Jeff Kemp made 17 completions in 25 pass attempts for a total of 195 yards and one touchdown. His backup, Joe McLaughlin, completed five out of six passes for 37 yards and a touchdown of his own, and quarterback Darryl Wong also got a chance to pass, gaining seven yards with his two completions.

Kemp's main receiver, Mike Lempres, caught seven passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. The leading Dartmouth rushers were Mark Akey, with ten carries for 55 yards, and Jeff Dufresne, with 11 carries for 42 yards. Overall, Dartmouth had 166 yards rushing to Pennsylvania's 60, and the Green out-passed Penn- sylvania, 292 yards to 107. Captain Dave Shula said after the game, "Everyone got to play, which is good for morale. This win will make practices easier."

in other September sports action, the field hockey team won its opener against Pennsylvania, 1-0, with a goal by captain Holly Burks. In their second encounter they defeated Plymouth State, 2-1. The women harriers also had a fast start. After winning the Bates Invitational they returned to Hanover to outrun Boston University and Keene State in the Dartmouth Invitational. The men's soccer team lost its first game, 2-1, to Pennsylvania, but bounced back to defeat Springfield, 1-0, the following week. Women's soccer fell to Plymouth State, 6-0.
