ASSEMBLING AGAIN AT the place where it . came into being two years ago, the Dartmouth Club of Virginia held its annual meeting on Saturday, April 25, at the home of C. G. Milham 'O6 in Williamsburg, the one-time capital of Colonial Virginia, with Dean E. Gordon Bill from Hanover as the chief speaker. More than a score of the alumni residing in the Old Dominion, with a delegation from Washington, were present, some of them coming from distant sections of the state. During the afternoon they made a tour of the buildings and gardens, restored by John D. Rockefeller Tr„ where once the Royal Governors lived in state. Following the two-hour tour, they were guests of Charlie and Mrs. Milham at dinner.
Dean Bill's talk to the group presented a truly fascinating picture of what was being attempted and what was hoped for in the revised curriculum and its emphasis on the social sciences. Discussion of topical majors, the senior fellowships, and related subjects helped greatly in bringing to those present an appreciation of the continued development of the College.
A surprise was given Dr. Douglas VanderHoof 'Ol, president of the club, and Charlie Milham when Paul S. Gibson 'l5, read a resolution of appreciation and presented to each a set of Dartmouth plates on behalf of the Virginia alumni. Dr. VanderHoof was re-elected president and Milham vice president (the third team for each), with Gibson being chosen to ,the secretaryship, a post which he had held since February in an acting capacity following the removal of Roger D. Johnson '25, to Washington.
Besides those already named, those at the meeting included Irwen Leviston 'B2, Dr. Ned Dearborn '9l, Warren Kendall '99, Charles H. R. Howe 'Ol, Harlan W. Wood 'O6, H. L. Armes 'l2, Fred M. Richie 'l6, F. Sterling Wilson 'l7, David E. McCoy 'lB, Eliot F. Stoughton 'l9, Richard Mommers Jr. '27, Arthur Perkins '27, Wendell R. Barney '29, Harold L. Fowler '29, Duke Barfo '29, William H. King '33, Page Worthington '33, W. P. Glidden, father of R. T. '35, Albert D. Ochsner, father of Seymour Ochsner '37. Charles A. Rich '75, had hoped to be with the group, but was prevented by a recent illness which kept him in the hospital for a few weeks and from which his many friends will be glad to learn he reported himself as recovering nicely. Lawrence Lockwood 'l7, was another kept away by illness, an operation for appendicitis a couple of weeks prior to the meeting.
Regular monthly luncheon meetings of the Virginia alumni are held at the Westmoreland Club, 6th and Grace streets, Richmond, on first Wednesdays. Following the meetings on May 6 and June 3, however, the sessions will go over for the summer until Oct. 7. Visiting alumni are always welcome at these assemblies on first Wednesdays.
