SUMMER'S GONE .... don't know where .... haven't done half we'd planned .... don't know's we ever will .... but there's lots of fun in planning, just the same.
TEN UP! TEN UP! For the grand, glorious, stupendous, class get-together, night before Harvard game, Friday, Oct. 22, somewhere in Boston Details later. . . . . Biggest event since the 25th Don't miss that evening of good fellowship and bull sessions! Friday, the 22nd!
THE SCARLETTS ARE BACK From their sabbatical that included study at Columbia, a tour of Europe .... hope to get some interesting facts later .... in meantime, permit us to quote "Cheerless" Richardson, who said to his chemistry associate Andy, "In half the time you sawtwice as much of Europe as I did."
1910 GOLF this summer showed Ray Gorton whanging 'em all over the lot in rare form; the inimitable Leonards winning trophies right and left 01' Man Tommie having won a couple of N. H. state championships in bygone years, son Dick copping it last year, son Tommie Jr. coming through this recent session; Bob MacPherson nearly upsetting the w.k. applecart in Maine golfing traditions when he fought his way into the Maine Resident Amateur finals, said Robert now being a full-fledged Down-Easter like Bill Deering, Tom Foster, Kay Dyer; Prof. Andy Scarlett pulling into the low Bo's after golfless visits with Mussolini and Hitler.
THE SCOTT PERRYS OF BUENOSAIRES, Scott, Mecha, Chick (18), Fredrico (16), Mechita (14), are week-ending in Hanover, whither we are bound shortly. .... We had a couple of delightful hours with them a day or so ago, and are booking forward to another session Fine family Having a grand visit to the States for first time in 10 yrs Fred, in line for championship swimming honors in South America, is headed Dartmouthward We'll try to give you more about them next month.
ROLLIE RED WOODWORTH, Barre banker, Montpelier High classmate of H. Pineo Jackson, has the dinkiest upper lip abbreviation you could ever hope to see, is new president of Vermont Bankers' Association Following death of his partner, Norris Bokum, Jack Dingle organized his new agency known as the "John Dingle Agency," Mass. Mutual Gen. Agents, 32nd Floor, 1 No. LaSalle St., Chicago, new modern offices having all of the dinguses and gadgets that go with the art of wagering on lives.
BUCKY ALLEN runs, down in Maine, one of the best boys' camps we ever saw. . . . . It's a real place, well managed. . . . . Mrs. Allen was real sick this summer .... and that promising young man-Dartmouth-athlete, Gordon Clark, who was killed about the time the camp closed, was one of Bucky's counselors. In a visit at the camp Gordon impressed us as a fine lad who was anxious to make good at Hanover and become a teachercoach His passing is one of those things that require lots of faith to accept.
BILLY WILLIAMS attended N. Y. advertising convention in July Mike Elliott, psychology whiz at Univ. of Minnesota, was called to Harvard psychology department for consultation not long ago, in Cambridge only two days. .... Mike's tops in that work, having received no little training when he roomed with Sid Whipple at Hanover Julius Warren has completed his third year as superintendent of Newton schools, and "according to state law is now established as head of the Newton public schools, and cannot be discharged except for justifiable cause." . . . . Thanks to Newton Graphic for the item Julius has bought a 200-yr. old house in Harwichport, where they will spend their summers Janet Mac-Pherson and Nancy Warren are friends at Wheaton Dick Warren enters high school, Dartmouth in a few years hence. . . . . Bill and Christine Tucker have a grand layout on their privately owned island in Lake Winnepesaukee, 21/2 miles from mainland Bill's done mighty well in N. Y. law, he and Christine are getting some fun out of life, you'll find them at most Dartmouth football games this fall Clarke Tobin is vice-president of the Propper-McCallum Hosiery Cos., a very sizable concern that employs some 700 workers in Northampton factory.
ED WELLS, son of our own Harry, member of Dartmouth ski team that went to Chile, won the downhill race in the contests below the equator Sympathy of the class goes to Monty Fall, whose father, many-time mayor of Maiden, died June 2, whose brother-in-law, A 1 Schofield, died the next day A double funeral was held, many Dartmouth men being present Lester Moses is new sheriff of Coos County, N. H., Lester having held previously several civic offices, former Lancaster selectman, present precinct commissioner, active in Legion circles Congratulations to Harold Washburn as head of Dartmouth's Romance Languages Dept. for current year .... while Harold was mopping up in French, his live-wire son, John, was chopping down budding tennis champions, winning boys' singles in New Hampshire Junior Tennis Tournament.
DOC (Basil to all good Dems. who came to the aid of their party) O'CONNOR, rotund of figger, broad-minded and intellectual in spots, former Rooseveltian law partner, present Presidential ally, caller of Big-Wigs by front names, wants a 1910 Aegis for his Dartmouth collection .... as we said, Doc's broad-minded and in a pinch would negotiate with a rockribbed Repub. from Maine or Vermont. .... If any of you guys know where we can help out D. Basil, write direct to him at 120 Broadway, or to your Sec'y. . . . . Here's a chance for some of you die-hards to get a little Dem. money! It looked to us like this 1912 bunch, of which Doc is Ex. Comm. chairman, had a mighty fine 25th in June .... it was good to see our old roommate Eddie Daley (now as big one way as the other), Jimmie Steen, Ray Cabot, the Hobans, li'l Jake Orr, Bill Shapleigh, the Roy half of the Lewis Twins, Hal Mosier, Randy Burns, Louis Ekstrom, at dozens of others.
1937 COMMENCEMENT was a big time .... roomed with Chan Baxter, who was on for Alumni Council meeting as were the Pittsburgh Maerkers .... saw around Hanover George Davies, Charlie Fay, the Merediths, Fletch Burton, Lew Wallace, Howard Smith, Charlie Bardwell, Norton Cushman, Slip Powers, Harold Washburn, and the Wolffs, whose son Alfred was hovering between life and death with pneumonia at Dick's House, where every possible bit of care and known scientific aid were being given. The break finally came in Alfred's favor, and a slow convalescence was started at our last reports. Herb and Mrs. Wolff were loud in their praises of Dartmouth's being able to have a place like Dick's House available for undergraduates.
1910 MARRIAGES include Tulsa Eck Hiestand's daughter Barbara to Fred Hughes Bragassa in June, news item saying "Mr. and Mrs. Hiestand the soul ofhospitality" which Tenners can readily believe Roger Sheets, son of our Ray, was married Aug. 7 to Nancy Nicholson, Duluth Son Brice Sheets soon to be married to Mary Jane Miles of Glencoe, 111 Papa Sheets and two sons all Dartmouth men.
THE CLASS IS ANXIOUS to learn any possible bit of news from the Harold Robinsons, who are near Peiping war area . . . . we'll appreciate any word that comes through We were amused to read former Tenner Carl Groat's (editor, Cincinnati Post), comments on yacht racing in July S.E.P. special article, only a small group in his city "know the difference between a motor boat and a coalscow." .... Otto Taylor has organized his own C.P.A. accounting firm, to be known as "O. F. Taylor & C 0.," 50 Broadway, N. Y. City Ed Shattuck got himself pictured in San Francisco News with Pres. Hopkins, Sec'y Hayward, at time of their big visit on the Coast last spring, Sir, and baldish Edw. presiding at the big dinner Ben Williams' new book "Crucible" got a lot of publicity when it was published in early summer Ben plays some grand bridge hands in his spare time Don't forget the Harvard game get-together!
CONGRATULATIONS to Grandpa Ted Smith, whose daughter Anita Smith Solis presented the family with a fine baby girl, April 4 .... a day also made notable by the Havana call of Mr. and Mrs. Cigarman Forristall on the Smiths . . . . other Dartmouth callers on Ted of recent are Kid Fowler, and 'OB Doug Ruxton and 'O9 Art Buxton.
HANOVER IN SUMMER has many attractions, not the least of which is watching the kibitzers help w.k. Dartmouth profs and coaches drive oil No. i tee .... and none any better than the intensely human and retired G.O.D. (Grand Old Dean) Craven, after you get out on the course. .... Comfortable shorts, much in vogue, have uncovered athletic, and academic, limbs You'd never know Deacon Downing's cigaretteless apothecary shop, present owner Bob Putnam having lifted its face and lowered its floor One fine Aug. day we were blowing the family and guests to a feed at the Inn in an effort to sell a chunk of Dartmouth to Univ. of Wis. father and a most promising son, while Pres. Hopkins, Joan Bennett (exwife of Gene Markey '18), and Movie Producer Walter Wanger 'l5 sat at next table. . . . . Other week-end guests at the Inn were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Vanderbilt of Newport .... so you can never tell, for Hanover attracts hosts of admirers who never went to Dartmouth The College is erecting a fine Colonial type store and office building adjacent to the Inn where Garby & Minsch's bookstore used to be, and running southerly on Main St. to the alley We were glad to see Bill Minsch elected a trustee of the College Bill is one of the most delightful men you could hope to meet in many a day Archie Gile 'l7, who was one of Hanover's famous short-pants gang when 1910 was in Hanover, is the new Hanover court judge .... speaking of delightful fellows, Charlie Proctor ranks tops That man has countless friends who rejoice in his licking stomach ulcers, and coming back to play a real game of golf A Hanover improvement this summer which we question is Dad Bowman's re-done Inn Tonsorial Emporium .... you'd never know the place with its modernistic treatment. . . . . Somehow it ain't the same Dad and Walt Chase look kinder sick in there.
IF IT'S CONVENIENT, slip Ralph Paine a check for the dues .... shoot a bucketful of items to your Sec'y We'll be seeing you at the Harvard game round-up!
