The Secretary was in Amherst, Mass., March 31, and had a pleasant call on George Farley. George told me of the very interesting trip that Mrs. Farley and he had taken to Porto Rico and San Domingo. Their courage and initiative was rewarded by a most delightful experience.
I met recently a citizen of White Plains, N. Y., a Williams 1900 man, who knows Ted Leggett very well, in fact is a member of the same church. He had many kind words to say of Ted's helpfulness in the church and in the community. How little we know of what our classmates are doing in the respective communities in which they live.
The Secretary received a letter from the widow of our classmate Edwin Buell, in which she stated that Buell had been an invalid for a number of years and that he passed away December 30, 1936. Buell was with us for three years, and we all remember him as a most enthusiastic and loyal '98 man. Mrs. Buell says in her closing note, "Edwin was always a loyal son ofDartmouth."
In a recent letter from Everett Hoyt from Florida he sent me a clipping of the Dartmouth gathering in St. Petersburg, at which there were 75 people present. Everett and wife are greatly enjoying their automobile trip in Florida. First they went to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras February 5, then motored to St. Petersburg, Miami, Palm Beach, and the east coast, and are planning to visit many of the interesting places in Florida. They intend to spend some time in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, a new national park. On their way back they are planning to spend a while with their daughter Alice at Mt. Prospect, 111.
Fred Bennis left California, where he has been wintering with his sister, the first of April, and intends to spend a month in leisurely returning to his summer home in Sullivan, Me.
Fred Pope writes of the Chicago alumni dinner, where a group of college mates of our day sat together, namely Kendall, Wason, Eastman, and Cushman of '99, Prouty of 1900, McCornack of '97, and Albert Smith and Pope of '98. Pope also wrote me first of the passing of Buell.
A newspaper report states that Joe Carney is retiring from his important post with the government to enter private business. For the past few years Joe has been a most active and helpful man in government work.
