THUMPING, TREMENDOUS, THIRTIETH!
Class Reunion—June 12-14, 1972
We haven't received any further information from Steve Winship about plans for our delayed 30th; however, some of the reunion committee will be meeting at Frank Simpson's Dexter Inn at Lake Sunapee on the weekend of the Penn game so I should have more details to report next month.
A late spring letter from Red O'Connor was the only remaining piece of mail I couldn't get into last month's column. Red wrote as follows:
"Still doing about the same since my last 'status report,' except for a change in my base of operation and an increase in stateside travel. After working for 25 years in New York City, I have begun the 'home stretch' from 'rural' White Plains. The National Foundation—March of Dimes, for which I have been the Assistant General Counsel for the last ten years, has just moved its Headquarters to Westchester County's 'seat.'
"During the past year, I have journeyed to Denver five times in connection with some important litigation and I have visited the capitals of a number of states, inclusive of California, Washington, Oregon and Louisiana in connection with presentations to state legislatures of a 'model' statute regulating the solicitation of funds for charitable purposes which I recently drafted for an ad hoc committee of the National Health Council and in connection with Medicaid and other public assistance programs as they relate to respiratory equipment required by poliomyelitis victims.
"Now that Dartmouth has turned coeducational, I have high hopes of my daughter. Debbie, being a member of its Class of 1981 and of her following the footsteps of her illustrious Great Uncle, 'Doc' O'Connor, of the Class of 1912, as a violinist with the Green Key Orchestra. At the early age of eleven, she has become quite accomplished with this instrument, being Concertmaster of her school orchestra and having been selected to play in the All-Nassau-Suffolk Orchestra."
Most of the remaining current material comes from the dues notices which you returned with notes to Lou Young. Lou forwarded them to me with a request that I give his dues collection undertaking a plug in this month's column. On September 27 he reported dues having been received from 185 men of the class, and indicated that he was still waiting to hear from another 400 of you.
Lou's youngest son Mike is captain of his high school football team so the Youngs will miss all of the Dartmouth games except that at Princeton. He expressed special regret at missing the Penn game and the mini-reunion at Dexter's. He said that Penn was a much improved team, and should provide the makings of a good game. By the time this is printed, we will know how good. Now for some notes from your dues notices.
Dusty Rodes wrote: "Rusty spending junior year of Dartmouth at Wellesley (believe it or -not!) and Ricky spending junior year of Albion (Michigan) in the Philadelphia ghetto. Both swam length of Crystal Lake, Michigan, this summer That's 8-½ miles—too much for the old man!"
Dr. Frank Brooks reported that his son William 8., Dartmouth '67, was married to Miss Merry Maureen Clark in Austin, Texas on August 19, 1971. Younger son Robert P., Dartmouth '73, was best man."
From Marlton, N. J., Roy Nevius wrote. "Just married off my last daughter. Donna Lee, to a Harvard man! I'm still in business for myself (12 years now) as "Contractor; Estimating Service" working out of my home."
Another brief report from Lee Cone "Family all growing 'up and away.' One daughter Sherry, at Lancaster School of bible; another, Holly, at Gordon College here' in Wenham, Massachusetts; our youngest, Chrissy, just entered high school, I am assistant to the president at Gordon 'liege,' directing the gift and estate planning program. Dave Chamberlain is the only "41'er" I've crossed paths with in quite awhile."
From Dr. Bob Rainie: "Dode and I were happy to have Robin married June 12th to John B. Wilson, D.M.D., recently graduated from University of Buffalo School of Dentistry. They are living and he is practicing in New London, N. H. Robin finished her third year at Smith and will take her senior year as an exchange student at Dartmouth as a commuter. (Another Rainie at Dartmouth!) Scott graduated from the University of Vermont and is awaiting his draft decision: Jiffi, 10, Dode, and I are fine."
From Orinda, Calif. Dr. Hyzer Jones reports: "Last year my oldest daughter, Chris, married a Cornell '69 graduate of all things. Daughter #2 is a junior at Southern Oregon College and we still have our 13 year old boy at home. We finally feel California is "home" after 17 years, but still miss eastern autumn foliage."
So much for this month. In his last letter to me, Lou Young had a great idea. He suggested that many of you could kill two birds with one stone by sending him your dues check and enclosing a note on the back of your dues invoice which, he said, he would be delighted to forward to me. Do it!
