At its meeting in New York, November 20, the Alumni Council completed a discussion that has occupied its Committee on Alumni Projects for about two years. The question under discussion has been whether or not the privileges of voting in Council elections and serving on the Council should be given to graduates less than three years out of College. By an existing section of the Alumni Council Constitution the rights of franchise and holding office are now reserved for graduates more than three years out of College.
Having discussed the matter at the past several meetings, the Alumni Council voted in favor of giving these privileges to all graduates of the College. According to constitutional provisions this notice is being published in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE in order to meet the requirement that publicity be given to the proposed change at least one month in advance of the meeting of the General Association of Alumni which will be held this year on June 12.
The resolution approved by the Council, asking that the necessary changes be made follows:
"RESOLVED: That Alumni Council recommends to the Association of Alumni, for consideration at its annual meeting of June, 1937, that it amend Section 1 of Article 5 of the Constitution of the Alumni Council by striking out the words 'beingan alumnus of not less than three years'standing' so that said section as amended will read as follows: 'Any member of theAssociation of Alumni of Dartmouth College shall be eligible to nominate and tovote for members of this Council and tomembership thereinand that it amend Section 4 of Article 4 of the Constitution of the Association of Alumni by changing the words 'Any aliLmnus of not less thanthree years' standing shall be entitled tovote,' to 'Any member of this Associationshall be entitled to vote' so that said section as amended will read as follows: 'Anymember of this Association shall be entitled to vote for the nomination of anytrustee or the election of any councilor.' "
The Council also asked Benjamin W. Couch '96, chairman of the committee on alumni projects, to present the matter to the Association of Alumni at its meeting in Hanover on June 12.
