Summer Changes
October 1938

While the enlargement and remodeling of the historic Nugget held the center of the summer construction stage in Hanover, the College went ahead with the usual refurbishing and building which marks every period between the close of one college year and the start of the next. As major items on the College program directed by Willard M. Gooding '11, superintendent of buildings and grounds, an addition was built to the Shattuck Observatory to house new equipment, work was started on a small dormitory for employees of the Hanover Inn, three new playing fields were completed on Chase Field, 14 new faculty apartments were provided in two remodeled houses, and the Massachusetts roadway from Wheelock Street to Sanborn Lane was reconstructed and improved parking facilities provided in back of Commons.

With the College and the Hanover Improvement Society hard at work, the town of Hanover contributed a major improvement in the form of a new and widened sidewalk on the west side of Main Street from Tuck Drive to Wheelock Street. At the same time the College built new concrete walks to McNutt Hall, Massachusetts Hall, and from the Commons corner to Thayer Hall. The College also constructed a new northern entrance to Hitchcock Hall and sanded and refinished the whole upstairs floor of the gymnasium.

The dormitory for the Inn help is being built on College Street next to old South Hall. With entrances on the north and west, it will accommodate 31 women and 22 men in separate wings. Of brick fireproof construction with an attached social room of white frame construction, it will be ready for occupancy in November. The faculty apartments were built at 23 South Park Street, site of the old Chi Phi house, where six apartments were made available early in September, and at 6 School Street, where eight apartments will be available in October. The playing fields on Chase Field were completed after work upon them was started last year. They are not expected to be put into active use for a year. The new roadway to Massachusetts Row will help solve the driving and parking problems which have centered around Thayer Hall, upperclass dining unit.

The new Nugget, which held its first show on Sunday evening, September 18, has a balcony and an increased seating capacity of 850. With upholstered seats, air conditioning, and modern equipment and appointments throughout, the Hanover cinema palace is now the last word in movie comfort and attractiveness.
