CONTINUING THE TOUR to far western alumni centers which he opened at Omaha on November 24, Dean Robert C. Strong will appear at six other meetings during early December. He will speak to the alumni of San Francisco on December 2, Los Angeles on December 6, Dallas on December 9, Tulsa on December 11, Kansas City, Mo., on December 12, and Chicago on December 13. During November his tour took him, in addition to Omaha, to Denver, Portland, and Seattle.
The far western trip constitutes the longest speaking schedule undertaken by Dean Strong since he assumed in 1933 the post of Dean of Freshmen and Director of Admissions. Prior to that appointment he was executive assistant to President Hopkins for seven years. After graduation from Dartmouth in 1924 Dean Strong became associated with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, but terminated this association the following year in order to return to Hanover as assistant to the President. In College he was manager of the tennis team and a member of Psi Upsilon and Dragon.
As Dean of Freshmen and Director of Admissions, Dean Strong is responsible for the operation of Dartmouth's selective process of admission and for the annual selection of a freshman class of 650-675 members from nearly four times that many applicants. In recent years he has served on numerous administrative committees, and last year was a member of the arbitration committee which settled the controversy over ownership and control of TheDartmouth.
Other alumni speakers during November included Dean E. Gordon Bill, who addressed the alumni of Lowell, Mass., on Dartmouth Night, and Prof. Herbert F. West '22, who spoke at Portland, Me., on the same evening. John I. Fitzgerald '40 accompanied Professor West to Portland and also spoke. Prof. Harold J. Tobin '17 of the Political Science department addressed a meeting of Boston alumni on November 16, speaking on the subject of mobilization. Dean Herluf V. Olsen '22 of Tuck School and Robert A. Hale '40, member of Palaeopitus, spoke to the alumni of Springfield, Mass., on November 3; and on the same date Robert P. Fuller '37, director of athletic publicity, spoke at Hartford, Conn., and Melvin S. Wax '40, sports editor of The Dartmouth, spoke at New Haven, Conn. On the preceding night Mr. Fuller gave a talk at an alumni meeting in Bridgeport, Conn.
