Tuck-Thayer Major
December 1939

INTRODUCTION OF A new business-engineering major, open for election by students of the College next fall, was announced early in November by Dean Frank W. Garran of Thayer School and Dean Herluf Olsen of Tuck School. The new major which the two associated schools are sponsoring in cooperation with the College was approved by the Board of Trustees at its fall meeting, following preliminary approval by the Committee on Educational Policy.

The combined major will provide training in the fundamentals of both business and engineering as a preparation for work in those fields where the principles of both professions are applied. Examples of such fields include insurance, public utilities, investments, industrial manufacturing, and the management and sales aspects of mining, building construction, and technical apparatus and products.

Students electing the business-engineering major will receive the degree of Bachelor of Arts at the end of their senior year. They will then be eligible for a year of postgraduate work in the two schools, upon successful completion of which they will receive the degree of Master of Science in Business Administration and Engineering.

Students electing the major will be urged to devote most of their attention to liberal arts courses in the first three years, in keeping with the general policy of all the associated schools at Dartmouth. Classes will be limited in size so that students may benefit from frequent and informal contact with instructors.
