The engagement was recently announced of Miss Soffe Neilson of Berkeley, Calif., to Ensign Fletcher Hale Jr. of Washington, D. C. Miss Neilson attended Miss Head's school at Berkeley, and the Dominican Convent in San Raphael. Ensign Hale was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1937 and is now on the U. S. S. Reid (destroyer) en route to the East Coast. The marriage will probably take place in June. The heartiest congratulations and best wishes of the class are extended.
Edith Chase and Jane Lillard were among the guests at the recent winter carnival.
Evidently the current seed and shrub catalogues got Walter Conley, as he writes that he recently made an early start for the season by transplanting some evergreens. We understand that dwarf forestry is one of Walter's hobbies. May he live long to enjoy the shade!
January 31 a testimonial banquet was tendered to Frederick Weston in honor of his appointment as district deputy grand master of the Taunton aBth Masonic District of Massachusetts, as a distinct tribute to Weston's work, not only in Masonic circles but in the community. There was a large attendance with an excellent program of entertainment. During the evening Weston was presented with a deputy's jewel. Fred responded to the occasion in his usual efficient way.
Royal Parkinson was recently appointed by Governor Saltonstall of Massachusetts as a member of the Advisory Council in the State Unemployment Compensation Administration. The duty of this Council is to report on the actuarial condition of the system and on all proposed legislation and similar functions, and is part of a program to remove the system as far out of politics as is possible. Parky has done considerable work pertaining to this subject for the past year or two, and we have every confidence that he will fill his position with distinction and credit.
