IT HAS BEEN two months since the last intramural column appeared in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Since that time new officers have been elected in the Department and so this is my first attempt to give you the low down on intramural activities.
With hockey finished, dorm and fraternity basketball and volleyball got under way early in January. Also during the latter part of the month the first of four duplicate bridge tournaments was started, victory going to Theta Delta Chi. Our schedules really got under way after Carnival with Delta Tau Delta capturing the fraternity basketball title by defeating Psi Upsilon 13-9 and with College Hall's fast-moving quintet smothering Streeter Hall's five 50-18. In the play-off for the College championship Delta Tau Delta turned back College Hall, 19-18, with Bill Mercer '40 and Herb Condit '40 starring for the winners.
The first of March saw the handball and squash tournaments under way, and three of the four bridge tournaments completed, with Beta Theta Pi in the lead. Middle Fayer defeated South Fayer in straight games 21-9, 31-19, to take the handball tournament. Wheeler Hall won the squash title by beating Hitchcock in the finals. In fraternity competition, Psi U defeated DKE in the squash tournament, and Zeta Psi won the house handball championship with a victory over Sigma Chi. Also in March the Intramural Department ran the annual interfraternity swimming meet, which was won by Sigma Chi, with Theta Delt and Phi Psi tied for second place.
Having run off dormitory, fraternity, and the College open boxing and wrestling matches during the winter months, the Department got the novice tilts under way the latter part of March. Plenty of action was the keynote of the finals as Bruce Friedlich '41, Don Salisbury '41, Bill Harriman '40, Jason Baker '41, Page Smith '40, and Creight Holden '41 became the new title holders.
Just before spring vacation the Department cleared up a few of the lesser tournaments in the slightly non-athletic line. The Tri-Kaps team nosed out the Betas to win the duplicate bridge tournament. The freshman class carried away three firsts and as many seconds to defeat the juniors and capture the class gym meet. The Zetes won the house bowling, and the ping pong tournament was won by Sigma Nu.
To be run off as soon as the remnants of winter disappear on campus: fraternity and dormitory softball, fraternity hardball, activities league soft baseball, fraternity sailing regatta, and fraternity track, golf, tennis, and horseshoe tournaments.
