Faculty Promotions
AT ITS ANNUAL spring meeting on April 29 the Board of Trustees voted promotions to is members of the faculty, appointed 9 new faculty members for 193940, voted a change in status for two present members, awarded bachelor degrees to ten members of graduated classes, and granted leave of absence to 21 faculty members for varying periods next year.
Eight men were promoted from assistant professor to full professor as follows: Donald Bartlett '24, Biography; Roy H. Lanphear '25, Greek and Latin; William A. Carter '20, Economics; Harry L. Purdy, Economics; Sidney Cox, English; George L. Frost '21, English; James L. Scott, German; and Chester H. Forsyth, Mathematics.
Four men were elevated from instructor to assistant professor as follows: Harry P. Bell, Economics; Francis A. Linville, Economics; George V. Bohman, Public Speaking; and H. Wentworth Eldredge '31, Sociology.
Harold G. Rugg '06, assistant librarian, was elected Lecturer in Art with the rank of assistant professor, and Philip P. E. Wheelwright, visiting professor of Philosophy, was elected professor of Philosophy.
Among the new appointees to the faculty for next year are two members of the senior class. Peter S. Cardozo '39 will conduct a writing clinic as assistant in English, and Wyman R. Vaughan '39 will fill the post of instructor in Chemistry. Others joining the faculty next fall are Robert H. Denison, assistant curator of the College Museum, as instructor in Biology (Zoology); James V. Neel as instructor in Biology (Zoology); Charles J. Armstrong as instructor in the Classics; John E. A. Crake as instructor in the Classics; Willis M. Rayton as instructor in Physics; James H. Young as assistant in Physics; and Arthur M. Barnes as intructor in Public Speaking. The Trustees also ratified the appointment of Dr. Walter B. Crandell '34 as instructor in Anatomy at the Medical School during the present semester.
The Bachelor of Arts degree, as with the Class of 1934, was awarded to Charles F. Orvis. The degree, as with the Class of 1938, was voted to George S. Allbright, Nicholas Bielanowski, Paul F. Clark, Chester A. Emerson Jr., Robert F. Matteson, David S. Pallister, Bennett H. Stein, and Ralph A. Van Orsdel Jr. The degree of Bachelor of Science, as with the Class of 1923, was awarded to Robert K. Lewis.
Leave of absence for the full academic year 1939-40 was voted by the Trustees to C. Dean Chamberlin '26, assistant to the Dean of Freshmen; Prof. Arthur M. Wilson, Biography; Prof. John B. Stearns '16, Greek and Latin; Prof. George V. Bohman, Public Speaking.
First-semester leave was granted to Prof. John W. Harriman, Tuck School; Prof. Herbert F. West '22, Comparative Literature; Prof. Hewette E. Joyce, English; Prof. E. Bradlee Watson '02, English; Prof. Hugh L. Elsbree, Political Science; and Prof. Charles R. Bagley, French.
Second-semester leave was voted to Dr. Joseph G. Pollard '23, Physical Education; Prof. J. Milton McDaniel, Economics; Prof. Malcolm Keir, Economics; Prof. Arthur Dewing '25, English; Prof. Charles L. Stone '17, Psychology; Prof. Warren E. Montsie '15, French* Prof. Harold E. Washburn '10, French; Prof. Ernest R. Greene, Romance Languages; Prof. Robert A. McKennan '25, Sociology; Prof. Herbert R. Sensenig '28, German; and Prof. Wayne E. Stevens, History.
HANOVER HOLIDAY SPEAKER Ralph E. Flanders '32k, businessexecutive of Springfield, Vt., whowill speak on "The Diseases of Capitalism" in the Hanover Holidayprogram at Hanover on June 19-25.Mr. Flanders is president of theJones and Lamson Machine Company of Springfield, is a member ofthe Republican National Committeeof 100, and was formerly a memberof the Business Advisory Council forthe Department of Commerce. Dartmouth in 1932 conferred upon himthe honorary Master of Arts degree.Mr. Flanders is the only one ofthe ten Hanover Holiday lecturerswho is not a member of the Dartmouth faculty. The other speakerswill be Professors Frank M. Anderson, James D. McCallum, MichaelE. Choukas '27, Alexander Meiklejohn, Artemas Packard, Joseph L.McDonald, Andrew J. Scarlett 'l0,Malcolm Keir, and W.
