sum BOYNTON MERRILL '15, D.D., pastor of the Second Church in Newton (Mass.) said in a sermon entitled "Hopes Against the Sky":
"Not a month passes that I do not learnfirst hand of some high post empty, oftenlong empty, because no man who hasdreamed high enough and worked hardenough can be found, who is willing to fillit.
"We need boys and girls, men andwomen, who will face the wind, who willhurl their hopes on high, who will remainsteadfast and hang on through all years andall weathers. Given this, the Universe, theWorld, God, call it what you will, has away of stepping in and taking a hand. Italmost seems as though the Universe wereforever searching for this kind of soul. When it finds such an one, it seems to getbeneath and behind and to start to lift. Before the thing is done, you have thespectacle of a life that, at the first, seemedto be toiling alone, discovering that unsuspected powers are at its side, and sharingits purpose. At the last, not only is the lifelifted and blessed, but all who touch itare lifted with it, too, and blessed by it."
