BIG GREEN SKI TEAM RECAPTURES CARNIVAL CUP FROM NEW HAMPSHIRE

NON-COMPETING UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE relinquished the Carnival Cup early last month, after winning it two years in succession, to a strong Big Green team which garnered 297.5 points out of a possible 300 to win the 34 th Annual Winter Sports Meet on February 5-6. Due to the lack of outside competition, Coach and Captain Bill Ashley '45, USMCR, decided to enter his "B" team, which ended up with second-place honors in the three-event meet. Middlebury was a poor third and Worcester Tech and Rensselaer Tech followed in fourth and fifth places, respectively. The latter two entered only slalom and downhill teams, and due to Bob Hanson's misfortune at the Middlebury Carnival the week previous (which Dartmouth won also), the Panthers could only put one man in the jumping competition and he came through with second place honors behind Cliff Hendrix, USMCR, of the Dartmouth "A" team, a former Middlebury student. Williams College was forced to drop out at the last minute due to academic difficulties.

Phil Booth '47 sped over the half-mile downhill course on Balch Hill Saturday morning to win in 32.8 seconds. Phil Osberg '46, USNR, who had been released from Dick's House only a half hour before the start of the race, was only two-tenths of a second behind Booth, and Bud Ellms '45, USNR, was just that much behind Osberg. Saturday afternoon 1200 spectators gathered at the Vale of Tempe to watch the jumping. Hendrix's 105-foot leap was the longest of the afternoon.

Early Sunday morning weather threatened to erase unusually good skiing conditions but just before the Slalom got under way the sun was shining all over Oak Hill. From Lyme Road the course looked like one continuous flush. There were sixty gates—hairpins, flushes, stem corridors,- down the north slope of Oak Hill for the first run. The second run, however, was practically wide open and made possible Bud Ellm's winning run of 42 seconds. His 59.6 seconds first run gave him first place for the event, with Phil Booth and Howard Hewitt '46 just behind.

Bill Ashley, who was still suffering from minor injuries sustained several weeks before, was unable to compete. He, along with Pete Brundage '45, chairman of the Winter Sports Council, and Fred Campbell '45,. ski team manager, leave for Parris Island this month (March) to begin their "boot" training in the Marine Corps Reserve Officers program. Bud Ellms '45, who has been an outstanding performer all season, will leave for Midshipmen's School at the same time.

CABIN & TRAIL ELECTIONS

At a recent meeting of the Cabin and Trail Council, the following men were elected to positions vacated by graduating seniors and by those leaving the Unit: James E. Schwedland, Chairman of the Council and also head of the Instruction and newly formed Fish and Game Departments; Trips Department, J. Alfred Gustafson; Cabins, Tome Kane; Trails, E. Quillian Brazel; Secretary, Charles Kaufmann; 1.0.C.A. Secretary, Harlan Brumsted. Doug Wade, the College Naturalist, was voted into C. & T. as an honorary member at one of the more recent meetings of the Council. Tentative plans for another 1.0.C.A. meeting at the Ravine Camp the latter part of this month has also received some serious consideration.

Dave Kendall '45, who is the retiring Council Chairman, left for Pre-Midshipmen's School at Asbury Park, N. J., the first of this month. The 21-year-old Naval trainee is one of three "Kendalls" that have attended Dartmouth in the last fifty years. His father, Leon B. Kendall is a member of the Class of '10 and his uncle. Warren C. Kendall, graduated with the Class of '99 Dave was for a time Chairman of the Instruction Department and served as Council Chairman of C. & T. during the past Winter Term. His popularity has reached to numerous northeastern colleges as he has been instrumental in organizing the 1.0.C.A. gatherings which have been held at the Ravine Camp. As Chief of Police, Dave was largely responsible for the financial success of the 34th Annual Winter Sports Meet. He has been an active member of the Outing Club since his Freshman year.
