By request of the late Ray T. Gile and under the direction of his widow, a collection of his maps and charts made and preserved during his lifetime work as surveyor in northern New Hampshire has been deposited in the office of the county register of deeds at Woodsville. The following appreciation published in a local paper is a fitting memorial of our esteemed classmate:
"Outstanding in his field and repeatedly consulted and called into court in the settlement of boundary questions, his wide reputation for accuracy and detail as well as his unmatched knowledge of the White Mountain section can be well understood from his works. Painstaking care and strict adherence to scale mark the numerous drawings of towns, street layouts, contour maps, and boundaries of private tracts of land.
"When the White Mountain National Forest was purchased, Mr. Gile, whose renown had reached Washington, was called upon to survey the huge area. Throughout the many months spent on this project a detailed record of each day's work was kept in well organized notebooks. Always on these trips as elsewhere the respect and admiration of his subordinates was commanded by the well-known engineer. Also numbered among his important works is the surveying of the entire border between New Hampshire and Vermont in 1890 and 1891 and the settling of the border between New Hampshire and Massachusetts during 1891-1901."
At the time of his death in January 1939 Gile was with one exception the oldest surviving graduate of the Thayer School. Mrs. Gile is living at their old home in Littleton, N. H.
The Secretary has enjoyed a recent dooryard call from Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Zutavern of Great Bend, Kans., Mrs. Zutavern being the elder daughter of our classmate Sutherland. Mrs. Sutherland is reported to be in excellent health, living with her younger daughter, who is the wife of Rev. Walter M. Swann of Grandville, Mich.
