A FIVE-DAY CONFERENCE on "The Defense of the Americas" was opened at the College on November 18 with an address by Carl B. Spaeth '29, executive assistant to Nelson Rockefeller '30, coordinator of commercial and cultural relations between the American republics. Mr. Spaeth's talk was one of the four main addresses which featured Dartmouth's second Conference on Inter-American Relations.
Other addresses were made by Col. Herman Beukema of the United States Military Academy; Ernesto Montenegro, Chilean ean journalist and author; and Dr. Frank A. Waring, economist for the United States Tariff Commission. Joaquin Nin- Culmell, Cuban pianist, also participated in the conference, presenting a lectureconcert of Hispanic American music on the final night.
Mr. Spaeth spoke on the work of the Rockefeller committee under the National Defense Council. Colonel Beukema discussed "The Military Aspects of Hemisphere Defense," while Senor Montenegro spoke on "Spanish America and the Common Defense of New World Ideals" and Dr. Waring spoke on "The Importance of Trade in Western Hemisphere Defense." Special exhibitions at the Library, Carpenter Art Galleries, and the Museum supplemented the regular conference program.
Last year's Conference on Inter-American Relations dealt with "American Solidarity in the World Crisis." Prof. Jose M. Arce, who directed that session, again served as general chairman of the conference. Other members of the directing committee were Dean E. Gordon Bill, Prof. Albert S. Carlson, and Prof. H. Wentworth Eldredge '31.
