February 1940 CARL F. VON PECHMANN

The months seem to slip by faster and faster, and here we are in February of our second year out. Spent Christmas with Henry Beck in Dallas, but you'd never know he's been out two years. As he says, There are only two things in life—fun andlove—and they're synonymous. He's the only one in the class I've seen in months, so it was even good to talk to him. Just a little balder and a little gayer. There was a class dinner in Chicago, December 16th, at Ricardo's, and from all reports was quite the affair. I can quote most of Walls' letter for the details. "Those present included the following: Bill Stead, Jack Mcintosh, M. N. Davis and wife, John Mercer and wife, Tom Antrim, Jack Griffith, Cocktails Borneman, Lou Williams, Johnny Armour, Mouse Hallett, Dick Gilbert, Blair Warner, Al Hawkes, Doug Carroll, Ed Krell, Bill Roby, Bill Faulkner, John Llewellyn, Chuck Compton, and even Clark Barrett, who flew in from Cincinnati. Quite a few of the above brought dates, so along with a few '39ers including Bob McLeod, Dick Larkin and Johnny Page it was quite a party. Bill Stead is still at Northwestern Law, Mcintosh is working for a real estate outfit, Mercer with a lumber jobber in Elgin, where he and wife are living, Lou Williams is still in the silver department of Field's, Hallett still with Lumberman's and playing hockey. Jack Griffith is doing something in advertising for some venture in the North Shore suburbs, Blair Warner with an accounting firm, Dick Gilbert recently was transferred here from Milwaukee by Standard Oil, Al Hawkes is merchandising and selling for Bauer and Black, Ed Krell finished up at Northwestern, and is now with Armour's."

Other news picked up regarding some who didn't attend. Ed Goodkind is married, to whom I don't know. Bill McFarland and John Cutler are still at Northwestern Law and sent regrets, Jack Huck decided he liked school better and is back at Columbia doing graduate work, George Payne is at Northwestern Business, Irv Brown and Barron Mclntire are at Rush Medical School, and Red Worcester is sequestered off in some lumber town in northern Michigan, which he says has Hanover beaten for isolation. That was a meaty letter.

Faegre has been transferred to Minneapolis to Insulite's newly formed export division. Publicity notice sent out says, "Three graduates of Dartmouth were among the five officers elected by the junior class of the Boston University school of law. John J. Dineen '34, of Lawrence, president; Robert Jones '38, Lebanon, N. H., vice president; and Albert Pettoruto '38, Lawrence, treasurer." Roily Jones is a salesman for Geo. V. Clark Co., Warren King, from whom long time no hear, is working for his Masters at Springfield College in Physical Education, and also Varsity Backfield coach. Gordon MacMeekin is a Lieutenant in the Third Defense Battalion at Parris Island, S. C. Jim Miller is an auditor in the catalog service unit of Montgomery Ward's Baltimore store. George Payne is taking a student training course with Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp in Pittsburgh, Bill Stuart, the little man who wasn't there, is with the Sperry Gyroscope Co. in Brooklyn, Jim Todd is an instructor in the Geology department at University of Minnesota, and Jack Bowles, it appears, has finally come through with what he wanted to do ... .

a church and radio singer. Bill Hardwicke's a sales agent for Standard Brands in Buffalo, John Laing is a student salesman for Weyerhaeuser Timber Co., in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Charles Barker is at a Howard Johnson's in South Weymouth. Seems to me I mentioned before how boring it was to continue sentence after sentence with "so and so is with so and so, etc.", and I'm still waiting for the answer. Leon Canfield is with W. T. Grant in Atlanta, John Coleman is new assistant in the Reserve Book Dept., in Baker Library, Jim Tompkins is with Wilson Sullivan Co. in Albany, Bob Crowe is living at the Phi Alpha House in Coral Gables, Florida, but what he's doing there is one for the question column ....

I was going to say one for the books, but as usual I thought you'd misunderstand me. Chuck Bullock is a salesman for Keystone Oil.

John Nelson has recently joined the accounting firm of Raymond Holdsworth in Boston. Reports Phil Thompson and Dick Rooker rooming together at Penn Med., and George ZelufF at Columbia Med. Hook Schneider finally came through with a letter. He's working in his father's beverage business, principally ale and lager. Reports Carl Hecker selling insurance in Manchester, Johnny Karr with Nashua Gum and Coated Paper (I didn't know there was any difference), and Cy Perkins selling gelatin for his father. All of which refers me to an anonymous letter, from which I quote, Cy Perkins in town for afew days to sell some of that health-building gelatin, which he needs a dose of himself. He was all done after two drinks. Doug Carroll is with Sherwin-Williams Paint, Ted Bear is teaching at the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind. Finally, the name of the Class Baby .. . . Squire Ganter. Larry Hull has a plan for future New York dances.... hold them at the Battery. Buy a keg of beer and the second floor is yours.

As for the marriage situation, it's still ripe. Parker Brownell still at Harvard Law, has married Barbara Belcher, dates, etc. unknown. As we expected, Jack Lutz has taken the step too .... date, January 27, girl, Millie Brewer, and now at home at 595 Adams Street, Quincy, Mass. As for details of the Fletcher-Benson tie-up, Morrow Peyton was best man, and Jake Carey, Sam Wakefield, Jim Cullen, and our dazzling socialite, Henkle Reno, were among the ushers. A little late to be fresh news, but Bob Griffin was engaged to one Norma Tozer in August.

Tige Chamberlain and Herb Loring are still at Chicago Theological School. Chuck Wiggin's with New England Tel. & Tel. Bud Fox has been hitting the skis a lot lately, and wants to know if anyone wants to join the Skokie Valley Ski Club. Dues two dollars a year.... to cover the cost of penny post cards and beer for the officers.

He's living at 548 Michigan Avenue, Evanston, and says the "548" Club is open for anything and everybody. It's about time we popped up with some snapshots. Hasn't anyone got anything to grace these columns? Mouse Hallett reports spending a quiet New Year's Eve in "Shouting" Peyton's arms, and says that Jim Cullen just married Art Larkin's sister. Also that the Merrill Davis's are throwing daily milk punch parties. Ferien Davis is now assistant to Advertising Manager of Hills Bros. Coffee, in San Francisco. As for the question of Jim Miller's wedding, he was married June Ist to Betty Meath, and they are living in Baltimore. Bill Canfield was best man. Al Boerker is now in Albany, studying public health work in the Division of Laboratories and Research of the N. Y. State Health Dept. John Hall writes that married life with the former Mary Ayer is the real stuff. So many are saying similar things now, that I'm beginning to think there may be something in it.

Laurence Symmes received his Degree of Master of Arts in History at Harvard last June, and is now teaching in the Marin School for Boys in San Francisco. I guess this ends it for this month, but hold the end of March open. We're making arrangements to have a '38 night, universally celebrated. Somebody make it a point to let me know of '38 activities at Carnival.
