Today was not good! Have you ever stopped by three stores within 30 minutes and been offered senior discounts at all three without even asking for them? Depressing!
Daily D articles from late fall 1942 remind us of what we were thinking about 50 years ago. "Palaeopitus Asks Administration to Ban Student Cars" (aimed at eliminating pleasure-use vehicles in keeping with war-time patriotism); "Class of '43 Votes On Final Plans"; "Yanks Land Paratroops in Tunisia"; "Casualty List Grows to 600 in Cocoanut Grove Fire"; and "Lloyd Holton '43 Gives Eye Witness Account."
Dartmouth ended the 1991-92 fiscal year with a modest surplus, rare among colleges today. It also ranks number-one in football championships since the Ivy League formed in 1956. And the College is second in student satisfaction in the U.S. News national survey. George Munroe has received the prestigious Alumni Award. A Green Key member, Phi Bete, Rhodes Scholar, and Ail-American basketball player, George reached the top in the Phelps Dodge organization and has occupied many directorships and chairmanships. He has served his college in numerous ways, including as chair of the Board of Trustees.
Al McBean chose Dummerston, Vt., where he and Jennie had a weekend home, for retirement when he left Southern New England Telephone in 1983. They lived in the New Haven area many years and were deeply involved in civic and community work. They are regulars at our fall minis and are still trying to become accustomed to the size, hustle, and bustle of Hanover compared to our time.
Another non-retiree, Ray McMahon, still practices law in Providence, sees Eddie O., and says hello to Jack "Geology" Troster, Paul"Pennsylvania Railroad" Rill, and DougKipp. He fondly recalls the fraternity hum when his house, Kappa Sig, sang "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny and particularly the line, "we are but a moment together and the parting may be long"—how true!
Tom McManus is still selling Fords, Saabs, Volvos, and Fiats at his Reading, Mass., dealership. His 50-year update lists Army Signal Corps duty in WW II, participation in the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy, marriage to Rosie, his Green Key date, in 1946, and joining the family dealership started by his grandfather in 1924. Rosie and Tom have three children, one a partner in his business. They spend free time sailing their Swann 44 and Black Watch 30 and traveling in an Airstream trailer. They spend part of the winter at their Vero Beach, Fla., condo next to a tennis complex. Tennis is Tom's favorite sport.
