FIRST PRIZE IN Class I of the Dartmouth Outing Club cabin-design contest has been awarded to C. Wesley Dingman '31 of Springfield, Mass., for his plan and sketch of a "wilderness cabin" shown in the accompanying illustration.

The cabin is described in the designer's own words:

"Such a cabin exists presumably for two reasons, to provide sleeping quarters and eating quarters for those whose pleasure or business takes them into the wilderness. The very nature of the location makes it essential that those wants be taken care of by the simplest possible means.

"The cabin provides for those needs with two rooms, a room for cooking and a room for eating and sleeping. Every effort was made to keep the design as simple as possible without making it barren.

"The pitch of the roof was kept comparatively flat so as to retain snow and take advantage of the natural insulating qualities of snow. The porch acts not only as living space in mild weather, but also as a sort of vestibule during the winter months."
