UNABLE TO ATTEND the official Winter Carnival in Hanover, February 9th and 10th, 14 rugged Dartmouth men from the San Francisco Bay Area, upon the invitation of Dr. "Bill" Washburn '14, determined to brave the wilds of the Sierra and hold their own carnival that week-end at his recently completed de luxe mountain home, located on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Those of you who know Bill can imagine to some extent what sort of accommodations he would have and what preparations he made to provide for the comfort and enjoyment of the gang. He even brought along the big chef of the Southern Pacific, his classmate Herb "Morgan" Gridley '14, to prepare the meals, and where some questioned the quality of a few of Herb's concoctions, no one questioned the quantity of food available. Line Wilson '13 found he even had to take home some of the wonderful Boston Baked Beans he had brought along as a precaution.

While Ray Taylor 'll, Al Livingston '15, Gob "Sing Happy" Des Maris '26, Mort Crowell '29, Ed Washburn (son of Bill and class of '46, we all hope) and the others chose to take their winter sports around the fire, poker table, bar or what have you, six of the lads, Ritchie Smith '26, Tavey Taylor '2B, George Hamilton '33, Bill Evans '33, Dave Smith '35 and Bob Archibald '3B ventured out each day to try the ski slopes around the ski tow built and operated by Johnny Ellis '35 at Norden, and incidentally to visualize what sort of cabin might be built on the property near the foot of Johnny's tow recently purchased by the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California.

Details of the fun, and praise of Bill Washburn's hospitality, could go on and on as did the singing, poker playing, and eating that week-end, but having been told the space is very limited in this issue, we want to be sure room is left at least to mention the first annual meeting of our Outing Club and the delicious buffet supper held March 3, at the country estate of Cora and President Ray Taylor '11. At the meeting the following directors were elected for the coming year: Ray Taylor '11, Dick Townsend '23, Al Gerould '32, Bill Evans '33 and Johnny Ellis '35. Tentative plans were made to commence construction this coming summer on a modest cabin on the Norden site, reported to be one of the best skiing areas in the country. It was decided to hold the Charter Membership Roll open a little longer to all Dartmouth alumni at the nominal fee of ten "iron men." David p. SMITH '35.
