HUBERT E. SARGENT '15, of Montpelier, state commissioner of highways, was elected president of the Vermont Alumni Association at the meeting in Montpelier May 2 with 85 from many parts of the state present.

President Ernest M. Hopkins was the principal speaker, with Dr. John F. Gile of Hanover, college trustee, and Paul Sample, artist in residence, speaking

briefly. Assisting President Sargent for the following year will be: first vice president, Arthur L. Graves '09 of St. Johnsbury; second vice president, Osmer C. Fitts '26 of Brattleboro; third vice president, Joseph T. Smith '06 of Burlington; secretary, Lester E. Richwagen '23 of Barre, and treasurer, Bancroft '37 of Montpelier.

Dean of alumni present was Alfred E. Watson '83 of White River Junction, with Dr. Edward R. Clark '85 of Castleton and Fred A. Howland '87 next in order. Enthusiasm whipper-uppers were John Hill '20 and Paul K. Deßoer '19, both of Montpelier.

Alumni expressed appreciation to Chief Justice Sherman R. Moulton '98, who served the association for the past two

years as president. On motion by A. B. Lane '10 of Barre, secretary of the association for 19 years, the association voted to send greetings to the College and pledged continued loyalty.

It looked almost like a Dartmouth reunion when the Barre Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting on Monday, April 15. Ralph E. Flanders, Springfield industrialist (A.M., Dartmouth '32) was the guest speaker.

At the head table were President Ernest Martin Hopkins of Dartmouth; Fred A. Howland '87 of Montpelier, chairman of the board of directors, National Life Insurance Company; E. S. French '05, president of the Boston & Maine Railroad; Paul Sample '20, artist in residence at Dartmouth, and H. Brandom Jones '23, president of the Barre Quarriers Cooperative. President Hopkins and Mr. French had come to Vermont for the meeting of National Life directors in Montpelier.

Included in the audience were William M. Lyons '23, L. W. Putnam '23, Leslie C. Ladd '24, Maurice C. Watkins '17, Laurence Campbell '22 and L. E. Richwagen '23.

"Swede" Oberlander '26, who sent thrills up and down the spines of Dartmouth followers from 1922 to 1926 has just been appointed assistant medical director of the National Life Insurance Company of Montpelier and will take over his new duties July 1. Dartmouth men of Vermont welcome him to their ranks.

Ralph E. Noble '23 has been moving fast in educational circles in Vermont. He has just been elected commissioner of education for the state of Vermont, to take over his new duties in September.

Harold W. (Hap) Mason '17 of Brattleboro has been elected a director of the National Life Insurance Company. A manufacturer by business, he also is Vermont's Republican national committee-man and secretary of the Republican national committee.
