As Charlie Wilmot, our secretary, has moved to Nice, France, to sell financial planning services to Americans abroad, and therefore was unable to attend, he asked me to share some highlights of our mini-reunion over Homecoming weekend, October 12-14.
If you weren't there, you should have been! Lots of us were. So was a lot of water, luckily warm. The weekend proved the clear supremacy of the Dartmouth football and men's soccer mudders over their Yale counterparts.
The '66 gatherings started on Friday afternoon at the frosh football game, where Irv Burkholder, Allan Anderson, and Gene Nattie watched Irv's nephew, at halfback, and Gerry LaMontagne's son, at offensive tackle, star in a losing effort.
That evening, due to traffic, I missed my 29th straight Homecoming parade, but many others did march behind "our" band (one of the benefits of being the 25th year class) playing "When The Saints" rather prematurely. Seen ignoring the rousing speeches thereafter were Larry Goss and Ed Jereb. The latter is rumored to be supporting two children on the campus. I guess Dave Owens also has had that honor. Are there any others?
After the bonfire, which nearly snuffed out a couple of freshmen, there was a wonderful gathering at Paul and MargotDoscher's beautiful home in Norwich. Noted there were our regular California contingent, Don Graves and Allan Anderson with their wives. Both are known to escape from that western paradise to the North Woods on the slightest provocation. Others from slightly closer were: JohnColby, Bill Ferris, Al Keiller, Brad Laycock, Frank Blod, Ken Meyercord (reportedly back for his first visit), PeterOrbanowski, Rick MacMillan, RichardKaiser, Bob Serenbetz, Irv Burkholder Robin Carpenter, Bill Higgins, and BillRoberts. Accompanying this crew were a mixture of wives, children, and even parents. Saturday came up wet, so we joined the '65s for a lunch indoors in Leverone. Seen there, also from California, was Pete Barber. And Robo Cleary showed up with his new wife, Pam. The number of confirmed bachelors continues to shrink. Jack Stebe was dutifully collecting funds, and NedNorthrop showed up looking wonderfully fit-not surprising since he is still rowing.
The football game was a test of commitment, and of umbrellas. It reminded me of our first home game when we held Penn to minus 19 yards for the whole game. Seen under their umbrellas were many of the above plus Josh Grindlay, Halsey Bullen,Rich Daley, Mike Clapp, and SteveZeller. Those who considered themselves already drowned and failed to go on to the soccer game missed a real treat. Dartmouth is spectacular—especially in the mud.
That evening featured several gatherings, but the largest bunch met at the Howard Johnsons for dinner, some discussion of our coming reunion, and then some dancing. Dave Johnson joined us for the evening.
The weekend was concluded with an executive comittee meeting Sunday morning. We are planning a wonderful reunion this June 13-16. Plan on being there!
