FIGURES ON COURSE electives for the first semester show 280 men taking advantage of the seven new defense courses which have been added to the curriculum by the Committee on Defense Instruction. Mathematics 32, an emergency course offered to juniors and seniors who can devote only one year to mathematics, shows the largest enrollment with 66 men. Fifty-eight are taking the political science course on "Power Politics," taught by John Pelenyi, former Hungarian Minister to the United States; and 47 are studying "Modern War Strategy and National Policy" under Dr. Bernard Brodie of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.
The psychology course on "Tests and Measurement for Military Personnel" has attracted 41; the geology course on "Map Interpretation," 35; the physics course on "Electronics," 23; and the senior course on "Components of Democratic Thought," 10.
Besides these emergency courses, the College this fall is offering its fourth primary Civil Pilot Training Course in cooperation with the Civil Aeronautics Administration. Dartmouth's full quota of 24 men are enrolled in this defense program being directed by Dean Garran of Thayer School.
Preliminary training for winter military ski classes under the aegis of Lieut. Piltti Heiskanen, former Finnish army officer who has been named Instructor and Director of Recreational Skiing, has brought out ninety men who are taking it for fall recreational credit. Several upperclassmen who do not need the credit are also participating in the fall workouts.
