NEWSPAPER REPORTS on October 28 listed President Hopkins among the eleven alternates named by President Roosevelt to the National Defense Mediation Board, but this was a premature and erroneous announcement since Mr. Hopkins requested the privilege of not accepting the appointment. A letter of appointment from President Roosevelt reached Hanover while Mr. Hopkins was away and inacces- sible, and public announcement was made before he could be reached. In writing to President Roosevelt immediately upon his return to Hanover, Mr. Hopkins asked to be relieved of the appointment and cited the fact that he was irrevocably committed to College matters which had to be deferred during his six months' service with OPM.
